Does anyone have any knowledge on British Trade dollars. One of my local coin shops got in a stack of them, all dated 1900. I was thinking of picking one up, they are asking $19.00. I am thinking they might have the same problems as U.S. Trade dollars with a lot of fakes, but I don't know this for sure.

Yes, there are plenty of fakes of these around - usually cheap copies in base metal, though some "jewellery copies" in god silver are seen as well. As a general rule, if the weight is correct, it's probably genuine.

I think there are even mintmarks in 1900 British Trade dollars, Calcutta and Bombay and no mintmark for London though I am not sure.

goldrush - $19 seems like a great deal for these. Send me a PM if you pick some up and want to move them on. I'd buy them even if you want to tack a profit onto the $19 for yourself....

The ones they got in are in circulated condition.
I guess I better go take a better look at them.

Same as Gothic Florin - if you pick up some at that price, I'ld love to pick up from you one of each date / mint mark you can find, with a markup for your trouble.

It is a 2008 Latvian 1 Lats coin. I own / run a water garden store and we use wooden nickels as customer loyalty tokens. I also bought a bunch of these coins when they came out. We give one to any customer spending $1000 and they can redeem it later for a free water lily plant ($39.99 value). I suppose they could get one of these elsewhere for a buck or two and then redeem it with me and I might not know, but the chance of that seemed pretty slim. I still have about 40 of these coins, as most of the ones we giveout do come back, so, svslav, PM me your address and I'll send you one.

Wow, thanks, jgfindring! That's very nice of you, I hope I'll be able to return the favor one day. Once I was in Riga, Latvia, (long time ago, in a previous life) and some tourists took me for a local and were trying to get directions. I guess there was something about me that they didn't believe me that I wasn't a Lat, they thought I just didn't want to help them.

Riga was, and I think still is a beautiful place. Too bad that they don't issue circulating commemoratives such as that coin (2008 1 Lat) into circulation. Last time I was there, and it wasn't a very long time ago I only had the chance to be able to bought some of those beauties. For your information, 1 Lat is about 1,5 Euro (or was back in 2008)

When I was in Riga last summer they had 1 lat coins that differed, though I only found this out the last day I was there. Not sure if they are classed as commemoratives though, I think they had fish and what looked like a pretzel and so on!

I hope it is still ok to talk about the Trade dollars. I went back to the coin shop that has them. They had a customer come that thinks they are fake, but thinks they are silver? I brought home a couple of them to check out. Never having seen one of these before it is hard for me to tell if they are real or not. If they are real .. or fake .. the price has came down. Here are a couple pics. coin one Edit - sorry had to change this pic .. put the same one in twice coin two Edit - adding picture of reeded edge

hmmm Krause lists the weight of the coin as 26.9568g It could have lost half a gram due to wear and tear.
