Now that my 7070 Type Set is done, I have really been focusing on my Lincoln set. (I did buy a Seated dime w/stars in EF as a 7070 upgrade recently so I am not completely finished!)

With the Lincoln set, I am trying to stay on my budget - which is $50 per month plus a Christmas and Birthday boost.

I have been selectively upgrading my Memorials - I occasionally get nice ones from circulation or buy them - you can still get some nice ones cheap. I got a really nice 1975-P from a guy on ebay who bought a mint bag of them. At $1 each with free shipping, I am not sure how he is making any money. Really nice memorials are harder to find than they look! I am still searching for nice 2001 and 2002's even!

I've also been upgrading the wheats and have red-brown or red coins going back to 1930 (my pictures need an update - maybe with the colder weather coming I will get some time).

It's beginning to get more challenging at this point. The 1930-1933 coins are lower mintage but I've just got 5 to go (31-D, 31-S, 32-P, 32-D and 33-D). The 31-S is gonna cost me of course in higher grade.

I've also been starting to work into the 20's. The P-mints can be had at a reasonable price it appears (for the most part - 21 is pricey) but I think I may have to look into AU coins for the 20's D and S mints once I get before about 1928. Even some of those will be pricey (24-D, 23-S). And then there's the teen S/D mints and I still need 14-D, 09-S and 09-S VDB which I will probably need to settle for lower grades if I can afford them at all.

Anyway - hope someone finds this interesting! Keeps me off the streets at least!

Don't know if there are any coin shows in your area but if so, you just got to go to them. One of the great things about coin shows is if you have them frequently, you sort of get to know the repeditive dealers. As you get to know them you would find you can actually place orders for certain coins for certain prices. And usually much, much, much cheaper than any coin web site of ebay type of places.
Also, no postage, lost in mail, insurances, wrong item sent and on and on with all the stuff via the internet.
Other great ideas are to constantly mention your goals here on this forum.
Not sure how the weather is by you but when the weather is nice here, garage/yard/estate sales run all over the place as well as flea markets. Try all of them too. Nothing to loose and everything to gain.
Good luck building that type of set. Takes time but well worth the trouble. My Lincoln Set #1 is all MS and it really took a long time.

Ken - Do you need a 1921 or a 1934? I have a nice 21 and three different 34's to choose from. Of course, you can drive over to my house some night to see them.

Oh....to provide you some extra challenge, look for Memorials with full steps. That is one of my biggest passions in collecting them. Many years are nearly impossible to find with nice, full steps.

Watch mint sets for these since they can be extremely nice and extremely inexpensive. The '86 to date mint sets are especially prone to having nice cents. A lot of dealers will even let you mix and match the packages so yu can get nice Phillys and Denver of the same date for five or six dollars. The early-'70's often come nice too.

Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.

Great advice. I prefer the shows. There's no substitute for being able to view each potential addition. If you buy the mint sets for more modern dates, remember that you can sell/trade the rest. Try not to settle. Be patient and the coin that is right for you will eventually come along. A Lincoln set is a huge undertaking. I'm still piecing together a 1932-1998 Washington collection which includes all proofs, type b's, and maybee someday the varieties, so I know where you're coming from. I've made mistakes but have learned much along the way. I wish I was as accurate with my grading and coin interpretation skills when I started, as I am now. Each date has unique characteristics, which even now, I am only partly familiar with. Good luck! I'm sure you'll get lots of enjoyment out of it!

Thanks for all the replies everyone!

I've always had some sort of Lincoln set since I used to go through my Grandma's penny jar (it was a big coffee can actually) back in the 1970's. I started getting back into it as a filler while I worked on my 7070. I bought a couple of lots of lower grade coins to fill in dates I was missing (minus the keys of course) and also bought some of the semi-keys too. Then I thought I should get the Memorial side looking better so I went through a bunch of pre-1982 rolls that my wife's mom was saving for my sons (what is it about Grandmas and pennies?!). That gave me a good start; after that, I thought it wouldn't be too difficult to get the wheats looking good back to 1940 and then I've just kinda kept going.

The coin shows is a really good idea. I haven't really done much in this area - there's a smaller monthly show which I want to try to hit sometimes this winter.

I've gotten lots of nice stuff on this forum via buys and trades. I've also got a couple of local stores and a few online dealers that are good sources. I also do buy some stuff on ebay - with mostly good luck although you've got to watch for cleaning and doctoring there. I worry a little about my skills in detecting those although I think I have gotten better there.

Carl - I think I have seen some pics of your #1 set and it is really really nice!

Thad, I am good on the 34 but interested in the 21 for sure. I will send you a PM to see if we can get together sometime!
