(I am not sure this is the correct forum to ask about proof sets)

I purchased the proof set from a local coin show...I noticed when I got home that the Presidential dollars in the set has some spotting on them. Is this normal? Why would these coins start to get spotting on them? He gave me the dealers trade value for the set $54.00, I figured this was a good price for compared to other shops I was looking at. Any info would be great....thanks!

The quality control at the mint has decreased un the past few years in my opinion. Though I am not the only one who feels this way:

I would go back and ask if he will exchange them for a good set. he can say no but he can also say yes and if you keep your cool he may even say yes. I always look before I pull out my wallet. the sets are not sealed at all so it would take 5 seconds to look before you buy. he may even use that against you but at least you know for the next time
good luck

Boy, ain't that the truth! Some of my Proof ASE's were really bad; one 86 has a sun with large sun spots and an 87 has a perfect Jupiter complete with the asteroid impact.

edited for spelling by me!

I have seen the same problems with mint and proof sets I ordered from the mint. I thought it was just me.

Reply to carmyle. I have noticed same problem on the circulated ASE. Hard to purchase a coin without having to go through quite a few coins to get to a good one. I'm very picky when it comes to my ASEs.

I have yet to see any of the Presidential dollars (or Sac dollars for that matter) that didn't exhibit some form of streaking or spotting - usually within the first year. It comes from the manganese in the coins. Manganese is notoriously difficult to alloy with other metals, and even when it does, it tones in a most unattractive way. This is the same reason that the silver War Nickels are almost always a dark gray/green/black - they were mixed with manganese.
