Okay day started off going to the coin shop. Asked if he had any new lincolns. He starts me off with a spread of 1909 VDBs and 4 Proof/SMS Lincolns. Well I picked up the cheapest one I figured . Took a good look with a Magnifier and said uhh excuse me but I don't think I can afford this one. 1909 S VDB had to look close but it was a S vdb lol
Thinking these had just came or I was being tested. But there would have been no way I could have bought that coin for the price of just a plain 1909 VDB. I would have felt so guilty.

insideout: Good on you! I would have done the same thing.
I was at a coin show some years ago and found part of a hoard of ancient Greek Rhodian drachms all in nearly as struck condition, 15 in all. I examined all of them closely, suspecting them to be fake. They were all struck from distinctly different dies, and I had a satisfying gut feeling that they were all genuine, and were from a hoard, as described. The price asked for was $20, which was quite wrong. Should have been around $250 each at the time. I could have bought them all, and dishonestly made a killing. I didn't. I told them what the price should have been, and they were withdrawn from sale.

He should have offered you the coin at a substantial discount in my opinion.

Well it's a person I deal with on a 2-3 times a week basis. Now pointing that out to him tells him 1 thing I'm an honest person. It didn't go unrewarded. Did I get over on him ? No.. But I know I did the right thing and so does he. I'm a firm believer in what comes around goes around.

I think you did the right thing. Going to bed at night with a clear conscience is important to me, more so than any coin or any other object I own. Based on your actions, I can see it is important to you as well.

He would have went to bed easy that night with a nice VDB-S right next to him!
I do see both sides of the story though.

You did the right thing. It's possible that he may have goofed on the buying end and paid for it as a 1909 VDB, but if so was likely an honest mistake considering he was lumping it in with the others on the selling side.

Wow! Seems to me, that the chances are, if they were all raw and had just come in, he (the coindealer) probably paid 09vdb price for it. But still, an amazing testament to your character. My hat's off to you!

Quote: he (the coindealer) probably paid 09vdb price for it You never know, he could have called the person who sold him the coins back into the store and had a few extra dollars for them. It could have been a single parent that their spouse had just died and left them raising kids on their own and with bills stacking up they had to sell off some of his prized possessions to pay for rent or food. If the person hadn't did the right thing you know this couldn't have happened but now that you know you did the right thing by pointing it out this scenario is possible. I am a firm believe if you do something that you know is wrong it will end up costing you in the end. Something will end up happening that will make you spend allot more than you saved on this one item. Just like something will happen to bless you when you do the right thing and help you save some money somewhere down the line. This situation was left in the dealers hands to do the right thing now, if he doesn't next time he may run into someone who feels like slash and cost him more in the long run. It doesn't really matter what happened afterward, its just knowing you did the right thing. It seems like most younger people now days do not look at the big picture like we were brought up to do, they are just out for what ever they can get for themselves (My kids too, even though I have tried to teach them right from wrong, I just have to pray that some day the seed takes root and they will feel differently some day) no matter who or what it hurts so this type of behavior is a dying breed but its so refreshing to hear about it when it does happen

I would have said "Do you have any more?" But would have surely pointed out his mistake. I'm in the honest is the best policy camp, too. I think you did the right thing. I can see where slash is coming from, though. At what point is it no longer called cherrypicking? I guess I have been letting my gut tell me. Sometimes it just feels wrong.
