Hi, I am a new coin collector, and have a user name here
I found that for a silver coin, there will not be a copper layer from the edge-look, while for a clad coin, there is one. But today I bought four 1967 and 1968 Kennedy halves from ebay. Three of them (1 of 1967 and 2 of 1968-D) have copper layer on the edge, and one of them (1967) does not have. But they are all 40% silver coin. Is there an explanation about this? I added a picture here. The four coins on the picture are 1967, 1967, 1968-D, 1968-D. The second coin has no copper layer.

I think it really depends on the coin, as I'm guessing the copper and silver were somehow distributed unevenly? I have several of these types of Kennedy's and the copper layer is always of varying tones. Some 1967's I have even look like straight up clad. Thought they might be fake at first, but they weigh out fine...

On the 40% Kennedy's it can go either way. I have seen them where the copper layer is somewhat visible to not at all visible. Only on the 90% coins is no copper visible.

remember that the 40 percent halves are still clad coins...they are just clad with 40 percent silver and some copper...so depending especially on wear and toning they'll vary in the visibility of the copper edge/

What they said was correct, since the core is mostly copper that is what you see on the edge. Similar to if you look at a modern quarter... you see the copper on the edge and the plating on the front. They look just fine and

also, if you're only rim searching, the 40 percent clads will tend, instead of having the copper ring, to have a more blackish ring like you see in your pic, than with full copper clads.

Bingo, yep, Obla is right. It almost looks like a darkish green to me when I see that edge on a 40% half. Spinach = green = $$$ ;)

And welcome!
