So yesterday I picked up a nickel brick at the bank as it's been about a month since I did any roll searching. It didn't take long to start finding quite a few pre-1960 pieces as well as a War Nickel. On about the 12th roll I saw 2 edges that were just like mirrors and discovers 2 1975-S proofs in almost perfect condition. That got me excited and anxious to see what else I might find. After all I found 2 proofs in one roll. Some rolls later I found a 1971-s proof and before I finished I found another 1971-s proof. I also found a total of 132 pre-1960's, the one War Nickel and about 12 2009's in exceptional shape like that just fell out of an original roll.

I think I have only found 1 other proof coin ever in change or searching. I really was left to wonder how they got into cerculation. Did someone unload a collection and cash them in at the local Coin Star?

You mentioned you found a 1971-s
I found a 1972-s and didnt think anything of it untill I just looked that the 72-s was not a circulation strike year.

I spent it and didnt give much consideration to it. I'm not a big jefferson fan , The nickel actually bores me
LOL

maybe ill search um a lil better
I mean I glance to see if they are a 38 39 s or d and 50-d but the other dates I dindt think had a prem

coppertop5150, the in addition to the keys and coins from the thirties the 49s, 51s, 55p, 1950p and the wartimes are all quoted in the cdn quarterly. Many jeffs carry premiums in high grades, like the 82p.

The oldest one was a 1939 in F but as a follow up, I went back to the same bank and got another box. I am almost done with that one and it is as bad as the other one was good. 10 rolls left to search and only 15 pre-1960's and nothing of note except for an AU 1959. I did however get a few foreign coins but nothing great.

The one thing that Coppertop missed is that these are proof nickels! Or maybe he didn't but why wouldn't you keep a proof in any case as I did. These are nearly perfect and not from customer rolls. I hope to come across some more but given my history in finding proofs, I could be very old by the time I see another.

Searching a box of Jeffersons sounds like a lot of fun. How much does the bank ask for a box?

A box has 50 rolls, so it's $100.

Well, I finished the second box. It ended pretty good with a War Nickel and a full horn 1937 Buffalo as well that I grade VF-30, not quite an EF. Not too bad.

I DONT EVEN LOOK AT NICKLES UNTILL LAST NIGHT !

I just found a 52-s

I'll have to make short list of nickles to look for in change
then keep it posted to the wall untill I remember all the other dates
like the 49-s 50 55 51-s
along with the key dates

Nickles just dont excite me for somereason , but if I can find enough decent semi-dates to make bulk lot 2 resell it might be worth searching. I get excited when I think of makng money of coins I get at face

For some of us it's not about making money ..... we enjoy the thrill of the hunt. No doubt there is little money to be made in roll-searching Jefferson nickels. Best wishes at the attempt.

Great finds in that initial box southerngent ...... I average 26 pre-1960 per box ..... so your 132 would be an all-time record for me!

Thanks for sharing the great finds.

David, I have no idea how a proof could find its way in circulation.
Who would crack a set, pull what they want and spend the rest?
