Hey guys, I had a question I wanted to ask. I have no real key dates in my collection, (with the exception of an 1803 bust Half Cent my old man gave me) but I would like to buy one. I am mostly a CRHer, and I have accumulated nearly 40 40% silver half dollars which I am planning to sell next week. I'm hoping to get at least $120 for them. I have been considering a few Key dates, including a 1921D Dime, a 1909S Lincoln Cent, or a 1914D Lincoln Cent, but I wanted your opinion. What nice key dates could I buy for $120? Are any of the ones I mentioned good investments? Thanks!

At the $120 level, I think you could get a fairly decent 1921 Peace dollar.

I think I'll consider that. Should I buy it raw or slabbed?

I think all are good suggestions- if you can get a higher grade 21D dime, that would be sweet. How about a 31S key date Lincoln Cent, EF-AU level- that should be doable for $120.

I want a Fine-12 1921D. What is the price for a Fine? A 1931S..... my old man has one of those, probably MS. Perhaps I should get one of those. They are nice. Are they a good investment?

A cheaper key in the Franklin half series, would be the 1955 p. They will run around 15 bucks each and are the lowest mintage but people dont seem to pay much attention to them, one day it may pay off

I think you really have to buy what you like. For me the 1921 peace or the 1921 D mercury. I would also consider because they might be in the stated price range. 1939 D Jefferson 1994 Matte proof Jefferson 1997 Matte proof Jefferson 1996 W Roosevelt 1908 S Indian head 1932 S Washington 1938 D Walking Liberty half dollar1970 D Kennedy half (high grade)

You could probably pick up an MS-60 1931-S Buffalo nickel for under $120.00. Might even be able to get an MS-63 if you do some hunting around.

I don't really have any suggestions aside from what's been mentioned. Just wanted to say this is a great thread :)

Thanks buds. Yeah I found a 1939D in Extra Fine-40 condition last month. I just may post a pic if I have time. Weerdsteeve, I'm not really into collecting grades. The 1931S Buff is a common coin, just pricey in higher grades. I want a low mintage key. Do you guys think I could get a 1914D Lincoln for 120? I've wanted one for a loooooooong time.

I think it would be hard to find a problem free 1914-D for $120. There are a lot of counterfeits out there so I would suggest getting a certified 1914-D. If you are lucky, you might be able to find a Good-4 for about $150-175.

You can find 14-D's in that price range, but they are usually in the FR2 or AG3 range and/or have problems. I did a quick search on ebay and found this one... http://cgi.ebay.com/1914-d-Lincoln-...em41544db372or this one from the same seller... http://cgi.ebay.com/1914-d-Lincoln-...em3cb25d4fdeBoth are in pretty rough shape, but they are still 14-D cents. If it were me, I'd save some more money and wait for a nice problem-free example like this one... http://cgi.ebay.com/1914-D-LINCOLN-...em20b4afc4c8I know it's more money, but this coin is far more attractive and I can promise that you'll enjoy looking at one like this a whole lot more. Not to mention that if the time should come that you needed to sell it, an attractive problem-free coin will be MUCH easier to liquidate, especially if it is certified like this one.
