Is that a die crack, or a scratch above Liberty?

I also was wondering if that is a die crack. Also is that doubling on the lower bend of the "O" in "one"?

Nice pull! An "S" in any grade is sweet in these parts.

Just curious. How can you pull this from circulation and call it BU?
Don't these circulation pulls have to be AU by default?
Or is it, "If you can't tell, don't tell"

That is part of the problem with using the term "uncirculated", it is a bit of a misnomer. The optimal term would be Mint State which is equated to a complete lack of wear. The problem is that a coin can pass through a few hands in commerce without sustaining detectable wear so yes, you can pull uncirculated coins out of change. Based on the bright Red color alone, this coin is probably Mint State. By the time a copper coin wears enough to reach AU55/58, Brown is setting in and the Red is beginning to disappear. Unfortunately, the true condition of this coin cannot be ascertained without better pics, too much glare.

Thanks everyone, sorry about the glare, this is all sort of new to me. Is it something worth having graded? I read another post that said it runs around $43.00 to have a coin graded? Will send another pic if I can get a better one, you all have me curious about the "O" and whether or not it is a die crack.

Not worth having graded (IMO). Cost of grading is far more than the value of the coin.
Definitely worth saving though!

That is an awesome find "in the wild".

The 55-S is actually pretty common in high grade because everyone knew that it was the last "S" circulation strike (for awhile at least) and so they were readily saved.

It's still a nice coin, especially given the way it came to be part of your collection!

BU stands for brilliant uncirculated
meaning it has a shiney untoned mint luster no luster missing ,
ms-60 or lower grades ms are BU

AU means some mint luster is gone
from AU 50 almost all gonr to AU 58 missing some luster

I guess BU was used when I was a kid and the new scale uses the 70 pont system
making BU replaced with MS

if I understand correct

This coin is MS64RD all day, and is worth about $3. It's not something I would send into a grader for a $40 fee, but it is a keeper.
