Hi, just got into collecting coins. Came across this 1799 draped bust dollar. Attached 2 pictures. Not sure if it's a reproduction. Any ideas? Thanks!

What a find.......I would say that it is a pretty safe bet that it was made at the same mint as this linked quarter dollar....(click on this link and scroll a little way down til you find the coin dated 1914 of the same general color as that of the coin that you have pictured).

In answer to your question: No that is not a genuine 1799 dollar.

Thanks all. Just did some research on it. One thing I see right away is that the mouth is not right. Thanks again for the help.

You could cover both sides of the coin and I could still tell that it is fake. How can I do that? The second picture shows reeding which is completely wrong for this coin. Bust Dollars were struck in open collar screw presses and had edge lettering. In other words, the rim on a coin from that time period should not look like that of a modern coin.

Just because the coin is the same color of one you found in 1914, doesn't mean that it is an instant forgery. The color of the coin has a lot to do with the way the coin is photographed. Sometimes, my coins come out gold looking and sometimes like and electrum color. Just thought I'd throw this out!

Nice one fen....I have a few as well, but this is the only one that I have scanned.....The only way that I can tell that both yours and mine are genuine is because the color is not that of the 1914 piece (and that ours are TPG slabbed)....

The genuine bust dollars are some really nice coins. The obverse design sort of shatters some myths about life in 1799/1800.
