Okay, I've got the wheels turnin' now...... Quote: (and I've read more of it than you know) I rather doubt that....I am fully aware that you can still read every edit that I have ever made here, (even though I cannot)....so I'll admit to at least being at a disadvantage....I'll give you that handicap.... Hmmmm......The Apple Club.....at Fort Devens? edited to add: No, no 1893....I am a wine-o.....I do not roll anything other than bottles, and I am more into emptying them before I spin them ....you must have me confused with President Clinton.

OK, fine, I already told the story. Understand, nobody gets to tell anyone else what degree of commitment to bring to the scene. We all collect - whatever we collect, be it information or metal - according to our own preferences. Information? Guidance? Fine. Direction? Not. Furthermore, and of very great importance, we all bring separate perspectives, separate styles and separate modes of expression to the table. It is in the synthesis of these that we find the truth. Just like aladin's form of expression is unique to himself, so are each of ours. We all sometimes fail to understand why we are not transparently clear to the others. That has no bearing on our intent or our commitment to do good. It's not black and white; nothing ever is. In that sense, I'm leery of pronouncing the ultimate evilness of the worst of the pocket-fillers among us. I invoke the name of Logan McKechnie - he's probably offering a greater variety of VAMs for sale than any other human alive, yet it doesn't take much effort, from the record he leaves, to understand his ultimate commitment to the betterment of VAMming or the quality of his heart. I say this to deflect attitudes from any blanket indictment of anyone, either for the content of their postings or the initial outward appearance of their actions. Yes, there are most definitely bad guys. But question everything. Most of all, yourself.

Wonderful responces!! I couldn't have dreamed of incorpoating the whole of vamming in one question........Many posts can only address specific ideas or draw spe3cific answers.... While the "WHOLE" of the subject/vamming is riddled with so many issues....The Novice or lurking bystander who is interested in understanding what every one's talking about... Like most of us rather than just jumping in we would rather "toe test" the waters rather than just jump in..Be the eve's dropper and learn from other experiences.. And fortunately there is sites like this where these are shared...our trials and triumphs.!! A cryptic post? "OH YES"!! asking a direct question will only retrieve a specific response, and this was and is not my intent... I am seeking to expand the understanding of vamming on the whole for our readers......On a larger scale....and not to PUT IT DOWN but rather to raise it up.... To many of us its not just the coin...its the process and the reasons why..and while of all of this is going on, but there are undercurrents of of political issues... the who's and why what vams are important or collectible and those no one seems to care about despite there rarity....On another front coins are silver and a commodity, for collectors of silver speculators and those who delve into die varieties as specialists....known as vammers on the high side and vammers on the low side of those like me who love the varieties as they are, not seeking fortune and fame.... But is us who seek knowledge, thriving to understand the process of how things happened and why..the KNOWLEDGE as described by others and deemed the "DEFINERS" of this non rocket scientist education level of schooling is required..... And at the same time the knowledge is needed to understand this vamming thing...if even for a common coin, the info is not available goes un-posted...and not unlike any schooling or tennis lessons, the knowledge is for sale, "it does cost" and not suscribbing leaves you in the dark and won't have the tools needed to know whats current... and this is ever changing... To understand all of this we must become like forensic mastersas well as understanding the minting process by which these things occurred...and the reasons why are still being discussed even 100 plus years after the event... and while most of us are thinking of the fundamentals of vamming, others are more concerned about the commodity side of life and the continuation of this vamming phenominum DAVE it was YOU who took all of my leftover computer crap... THANKS!I hate moving and where to junk your junk.... LIKE THIS POST.....sometimes a direct approach for answers is not a direct question....and as such it leads to many more issues within the subject as a whole, which is my intent.... EVEN SO... "it is what it is" an old saying as its what we have to work with...and its not a perfect system but we do have the right to think about it and suggest or question where things are going.... I do appreciate all of your answers.........I'll try LOL not to be so cryptic ....but sometimes I like to really make people think.....beyond the genaric ideas..

It's possible that I could be happier with where I am and what I'm doing in this moment, but unlikely. We, each and every one of us, aladdinslamp, walk our own path with our own attitudes. Sometimes it's only random chance that we manage to communicate. If we argued it hard enough, we would all disagree with what's happening in VAMming, and probably about some single VAM attribution. None of us are 100% correct, and that's the point. The truth is always in the middle. And, no, I ain't got your computers. If you ever find them, though, I'm interested.

Well yes/no..Zee .. but still to make one think on the grand scale is what its all about.... Bringing our own understandings together to find the truth each in our own way.....learning from others on there grand scale or we would be arguing over the small details not realizing there is a grander scale one must understand as well as the complexity of the subject. It is no small subject or "CUT AND DRIED"

Actually Gene, there is a black and white, a cut and dry to some things....fact is the optimal goal, and that is why I've studied the prints, the drawings, rather than the coins....I really am lost when it comes to those shiny round things, but I know what made them as well as anyone anywhere, and if that sounds conceited, then so I am. It is my avenue of feeling importantly unique......I am learned in print reading, so it comes easy to me...... everyone else had such a great head start on the coins, I felt that I could not catch up unless I expended a great deal of time and energy memorizing things that I really was not sure were properly identified in the first place....and then when I have learned the coin thing, I would be just another fish in the pond....I like being better (at 'something'), I feel the need to be. If you've noticed, I don't normally enter into discussions of 'what VAM is this'(unless I feel that a newbie is being neglected), or 'how would you grade this coin' or 'does this look cleaned to you'.......No, I am totally ignorant of such things.....I am totally disinterested too....I am not a coin person Gene.....I am here only to have fun wiff muh buds, and if I do happen to learn something along the way, great ! I like to debate and discuss, but only on topics that I am familiar with....and those are few.....'what caused this' is a thread topic that I will read and respond to, and half of the time I will be wrong, because I don't go to shows, to B&Ms, I don't buy or sell, I don't see alot of coins except pictures of them on sites like this....I don't do the normal stuff..... This is all I know....the cause and effect threads and the general discussion type stuff like this thread.....I am not ashamed.....I will hold my own when I feel the need to, or I will let it go when I see no further fun or merit in it.....Some may see it as running away, I see it as washing this crap off of my hands because it smells bad, (and I won't touch it again). Do I think that most people understand or are even interested in what I am talking about ?.....I am not that naive.....I know that people aren't interested in what I say, but I try to be clear just in case there might be even one person who is......Do I understand what you are talking about half of the time? Heavens no....when you start talking about VAM 1B3C and stuff like that, my head begins to swim, and I fade away..... What a boring world it would be if we all agreed on everything.....congenial disagreement is very important to all of us whether we realize it or not..... Many of the folks that I am most fond of today are those that I wanted to slap because of their opinions yesterday......I get caught up in the heat of the moment very easily, but I do recover from it overnight.

It looks like a lotta PMD to me....You are just messin' with me aren't you Gene ?......I know that you can take some mighty nice pictures....so what's up with this copper colored thing?.... If you say it is a break, I will believe you....... You are not going to get me going on that die crack/planchet flaw/PMD thing again so soon after my last folly.....(I still have a black eye from that one)...

actually its a COUNTERFIET I found the other day....Its a horrid thing...things like the discussions we have taken place with, you begin to develope a keen eye of detail, in this case the OBV lettering is so bad it really jumps out at you one you take a good look....and the REV wreath is horrid, with a huge break....but the over all detail its not american quality....I have heard and seen some pics of these things, just never found one myself...

As I said Oz, quite a bit: I have learned that Dave is a collector of more than just coins. I have learned that Gene likes to mess with us....(me in particular). I have learned that you have the same views of the direction of this hobby that I had voiced several months ago, but I felt alone then. I have learned that the four of us all see the same things, but from differing vantage points, and that our methods and intensity of expression differ greatly, which causes us to perceive disagreement within each other, while I now think that we actually do agree, but just are not aware of it sometimes. I have learned why this hobby does not flourish as it should..... despite the rehabilitative efforts of a few, it is being weakened by parasites, and merely looked upon in helpless wonder by the rest.
