One of those posts that will irritate real die hard coin collectors. But lacking the Royal Canadian Mint gift-ware category on this forum, one is obliged to discuss among the grown ups. The Blue Whale coin and stamp set celebrating Canadian wildlife is the latest set released by the RCM. The previous set - Sable Island Horse and Foal $5 set was released in 2006. This 4-year lapse in the series could very well be explained by the increased production of all Vancouver Olympics coins. But... looking at the sales figures of the 2005 and 2005 coin&stamp issues we find that those sets did very poorly, sometimes less than 25% of the expected mintage. I believe the Mint decided to take a break -- or kill the series. But since then, on the secondary market, the Elusive Loon (2004) and Majestic Moose (2005) did exceptionally well, and most other sets managed to maintain their value, which is unusual for NCLT coin sets. So did the Mint decide to capitalize...? and follow-up this year with: "The blue whale is the last coin and stamp set in the Canadian Wildlife Series co-produced by the Royal Canadian Mint and Canada Post. The $10 sterling silver coin is presented along with two of Canada Post's largest stamps ever in a beautiful maple wood box. Also includes a fact-filled, full-colour booklet on the blue whale." - http://www.mint.ca/store/coin/10-st...Id=cat410002Based on very positive reviews so far, lower mintage, great value, one could expect a sell out at the Mint. Hard to predict. The largest and most majestic creature on earth may very well sink to the bottom...

the low mintage might make this set a mover. don't know if I would buy one though. I found the stamp at least to be very impressive.

I think it's one of the most handsome sets I've seen. If own the entire series, I would purchase a couple. OH heck, you talked me into it!

CC, thanks for the Blue Whale reminder on the Forum. I gave myself an early Christmass gift; OK, 5 actually. Once you get in that website, you have to look at everthing. I missed the first 8, but I'm sure I'll find them on ebay. I doubt the Fourum members would give up any of their commems.

Hi c, All of the sets were available on ebay, as of yesterday at least. The moose is definitely harder to get. So you bought 5 sets! Good luck I hope this set turns out good.

Actually, only 2 of the whale, those 2 and 3 other sets. I really like the locomotive series and my son collects model trains. When I show him this one, he'll wet his pants. Oh how we torture our kids.

The RCM claims higher demand of this product... so it may not ship in time for x-mas. That's too bad. But I doubt it's back-order due to higher-than-expected demand however. Based on the sets released in the past, at 10,000 mintage it would have sold out already. I think they ran into supply problems for this high quality wooden case. It is truly outstanding for the price.

Ordered mine 3 days ago and just received them today. And that's "way down yonder in in the Papaw Patch"; that is southeastern Virginia. They are beauties. I think I like the Locomotive coin as well. Just curious, are you folks keeping yours in the display case? It seems to me the the RCM and USM are going way overboard on display cases lately. Don't misunderstand, the maple case is beautiful, but is it that important? Seems to be a waste of a perfectly good maple. The USM did the same thing to the UHR Eagle with that rosewood case. No one wanted the case, just the coin.

Wow - in just 3 days! That's extraordinary. You must be a good customer.
The display case counts for me and I will surely keep it because of the extra large stamps... I don't collect and have nowhere else to store the stamps. I think buyers should have a choice to buy with, or without the case. The Mint offered this on their pure gold coins years ago. You could save a few bucks if you bought the raw coin. Those cases are in very high demand nowadays.

Not really, a few hundred a year. They must know I'm originally from the Great Lakes Area. Eh!

Oddly, the $10 blue whale (sold out) has the same specifications as other $20 proof coins that have been issued recently. Just one of those things about NCLT I suppose. (Note: Vancouver Olympic $25 also have the same specs, but they have selective holograms which could justify the face value differential).
