That is a beautiful example of what is one of my favourite design types on Greek coins. They are lovely, large coins. The style of the Amazon Kyme isn't always high art but when the style is good then these are hard coins to beat in terms of artistry. I must admit that I love to handle my ancients and whenever I obtain one that has been slabbed I have to liberate them. I agree that the AU grading seems a little optimistic. I have an example too. My example has a different magistrate, KALLIAS, to yours. Mine was graded as EF by the dealer and the grading seems fair to me. There are a range of these large Stephanophori produced in the mid second century and I would love to have an example of each type. I can but dream... Regards, Martin

Hi Martin, Your Amazon looks younger and prettier than mine and the workmanship seems more refined as well. She's a beauty; thanks for sharing!

That's an excellent coin - congratulations on a great addition to your collection.
Slabbing ancients is a bit of a red rag to a bull with most ancients collectors - with the vast majority detesting the things and "liberating" the coin as soon as possible. The AU50 has no real meaning when applied to ancients.
Martin's coin in the raw, as you say, is so much more alive than one entombed in plastic. Release the ancient - you know you want to :)

I have recently added another of these wonderful looking coins to my collection. A different magistrate to both shown above. Regards, Martin

That's a beautiful coin! I really like the high-relief and attention to detail. I don't know how one precisely grades an ancient "AU50". It can be hard to separate strike from wear. A wonderful type; I'll have to get one someday.

I don't collect Greek coins, but having looked at this thread I am sorely tempted. These are beautiful coins all three.

I'm tempted too. But, after checking the market on these, my temptation has waned.

Fabulous coins! I only have a couple greeks. They can be very pricey as mentioned, but you can get some nice greeks for affordable prices.

This thread was too much for me--I succumbed and bought my first Greek. I'll post pictures when it arrives.
