Every time I look at this coin I wonder if it would be worth sending it to a TPG. It appears to be a high-grade unc and has some deep obverse golden tone. The edge is also toned but the reverse is still brilliant white. How would you all grade it, and do you have any thoughts about whether the tone is original or artificial?

Good question. Unless someone thinks it's at least an MS-66, I would not send it off. It'll still cost you around 30 bucks to get it graded and slabbed. Most wont's send off a coin unless it's worth over $250. I think MS-66 coins are bring in about $150 but it jumps to over $500 at 67. I think it's a beautiful coin and I don't like toned coins.

Is that the SMS double die variety? If not, the 1966 Kennedy isn't really worth much in MS-66 or MS-67; $6 and $10 sales prices on Teletrade

Nice coin but I doubt you'll gain anything by having it graded.
I like the toning and am a big fan of Kennedy's

MS66 one sold for $13 on July 2010 on David Lawrence. MS67 will get you a down payment on a car though.

I am missing something? The MS-66 and MS-67 SMS 1966 Kennedy halves seem to go for $8-$12 on TeleTrade. Is this some other variety?

A DCAM PF67 goes for a down payment on a car but this isn't one of those.

Not worth slabbing unless you are sending in a "bunch" to be graded

The birds beak is in awsome condition

Consider these things
the shield at the very bottom where the lines meet the outer edge of it.
and maybe a few tail feathers look damaged

the cheek above the lip might have a few scratches

BUT I BET THAT IS ONE SHINEY CHROME LIKE KENNEDY!
the reflection is like bright like taking a flash pic of a proof quater from that area
