I need some help deciding what to make of this. At my school there were several coin collectors and we would have conversations very similar to what you find most anywhere in this forum, so I would think collecting coins is a valid hobby. But if I were to check the date and mint of what I got back in change in the lunch line some girl would say something like "it's a dime Dave". One day I brought a Coin World newspaper to school and showed all my coin collecting friends who thought it was great and they all enjoyed looking at it, but when I opened it up for the bus ride home this girl and her friend laughed at me hard for half the ride home. I've also noticed when my dad went to my grandparents house (mothers side), then went through $300 worth of rolled quarters, my grandmother said to my grandfather "I don't know what's wrong with that man, I don't know what our daughter sees in that man". So not sure what to make of all this but I'm guessing if you are going to collect coins and not keep it a secret it's a fact of life you will be made fun of? Particularly by females?

to CCF! Naw, they're just being kids. Just like they make fun of the guy that collects boogers. Besides, you're the one with the money! Ones that they will look back on one day and say "I wish I had done that." Grandma was probably just bustin grandpa's chops. Next time you're in line at lunch, just put the coins in your pocket and check them later.

The statistics show that coin collecting is indeed, in America at least, a male-dominated hobby. So it's statistically more likely that any mockers of the hobby will be female.
However, I'd consider it rather immature and rude for anyone to actually poke fun at you personally. To anyone who didn't understand coin collecting and was openly dismissive of it, I would agree with Mr. T: "I pity the fool!"
But you have stumbled upon one reason why many coin collectors do keep their hobby a secret. The other reason is of course security.

First off . Let me guess these are the same kind of girls that would show up at wal mart to buy the new Twilight movie four hours early because they are giving out Edward stickers for free, right? It's like scooby said "you have the money", and will continue to as long as you collect wisely. And we all know thats the ONE thing ALL women like. It is awesome to see you getting into it at a young age just gives you more years to learn and collect. Next time you catch some grief at school just quote some prices of a couple error coins or some nice key date prices and watch the kiddies mouths drop. Also since you are so young and probably have a ton of disposable income maybe you should get your feet wet in the metals market. Gold may be out of your price range, but silver is still relatively cheap and its price continues to climb steadily. I think everyone in the forum would suggest silver. Oh and to answer your original question, yes I do get made fun of sometimes. But this is not a hobby of dorks, it is a hobby of kings. Some of which do happen to be dorky.

I do get teased from time to time for what I may pay for a coin. But, I still collect and will continue to do so!

Slashmaster, My son also collects, he is 13 now, when he gets teased at school and by his friends, his only response is: I am already on my way to buy my Ferrari, will you buy one someday?. Almost everybody collect something of some sort, you just do the hobby of Kings. Kids, and adults will tease as it is what they do, they do that as they want to get attention. Dont give up on any of your dreams, no matter what anyone says.

I'm teased at work sometimes, "hey what's the value of a 1965 dime?".....it's all in good fun....sometimes people are just jealous, sometimes they just don't understand. My metal detecting hobby takes a serious poking from others, if they could just share the joy in that old Morgan dollar, or sweet Barber quarter that I unearthed....

slashmaster to CCF. I have been out of school for quite some time now. Yes, I started collecting at a young age too. Don't let this get to you. Even now my girlfriend and family members still poke fun at me. I know they don't mean any harm, it's just that when people don't understand something, it's easier to make fun of it. My sister in law always starts in on me about my coin collecting. So here is what I did. I asked her for change for a $100.00, she gave me 4- $20.00 & 2- $10.00. One of the $20.00 was a early star note (first 2 #'s were 00). I showed her the bill and told her it was worth about $40.00. She begged for it back but I told her no, that this is one of the perks of collecting. And, that it doesn't have to be old to be worth a little money. I never told her the truth about the value of the note. To this day she now checks her notes. So, now when she pokes fun, I just ask if she has come across any good notes lately.

Slashmaster: Welcome to the CCF! It is probably true that most of us on this Forum may be older than you. So what!
You have more sophistication than those who laugh at you!
I started collecting when I was eight.
I have a niece who is fascinated by coins, in particular, ancient ones, although boys are of much greater interest to her. She is probably a bit older than you, perhaps 5 years or more, but she is studying for a Phd in Roman sociology right now, and she is certainly not a female geek!

Thanks for the replies so far everyone! Just to make things clear I'm not still in school, this was about 87-89 that these things happened to me while I was in 6th or 7th grade.

Some kids in high school really don't know what the world is all about yet. If it bothers you that they tease, don't let them know. Trust me, as you get older you care less and less what other people think and just do what you want. Also people are more excepting and actually are attracted to people who are individuals, and don't follow the crowd, as they age (and mature). Be yourself and be proud of who you are!!

well, right now, I'm experiencing what happens when you collect coins in 7th grade. "gotten any new coins lately?" "Why would anybody collect coins? its so stupid!" "why would anybody pay $10 for a penny?" "collecting coins is so gay, like you".
But I just wave it off like all of the other insults I get. I'm proud of my hobby. I show that I'm proud. and I don't give a darn what other people think.

For me, at first there was a wee bit of "why are you doing that" type of comments. After the stash bulit up....I hear no more of that nonsense.

I got teased a bit as a kid for my collecting and computer programming but once I got older these translated into big money. My brother did even better he was a sports statistics geek got a job as a vp at an insurance firm doing stats .. Quit that job, moved to vegas, and got VERY rich (think gordon gecko) doing betting line arbitrage.
Morale of the story is don't abandon your passion even if people make fun of it.

Mildly, sometimes. Then I mention how the double eagles I bought for $350 are now worth $1500 and how I've sold 1914-D/1922 Lincolns and silver found in change. That usually stops them in their tracks. It's even better if I can throw out a line like, "so how much have you made playing your video games."

I'm just getting into coin collecting and the only thing said so far was by a co-worker who jokingly made the comment that I was turning into a nerd. I get more slack about metal detecting that anything else.
