My experience is the nerds get a bit of a short deal in high school but, by age 30, most of the former jocks have lost their "eye appeal"; usually what starts out as MS-65 ends up as VG-8 or even AG-3. They are COMMON DATES too. The nerds by contrast tend to upgrade from an AG-3 to perhaps a nice EF-40 and they are usually KEY DATES (good career, etc...).
So amortized over a lifetime it is darned good to be the nerd. Just pay a bit of a price up front. No big deal :)

You need to work on your snappy comebacks... "it's a dime Dave". No, baby, YOU'RE a dime - THIS is a 10 cent piece... "I don't know what's wrong with that man, I don't know what our daughter sees in that man". Umm - hmm - let's see - maybe MONEY? BRAINS? (use your church lady voice) "collecting coins is so gay, like you". No - Justin Bieber is gay - collecting coins is just a hobby! (everything is apparently gay in 7th grade based on my 6th and 8th grader's comments)

KenKat - ain't that the truth? Every time one of my kids says that, I put on my blank look and say, "Oh, they're happy, that's great!" I got teased.. still do. But now it's by my own kids - they even call me a geek - and I'm a girl! "Mom's got her coins out again"... Believe me, the comments/teasing are not female-centric. Most of the teasing I got about collecting came from BOYS.

Haha I like this thread! But I've never really been made fun of, my girlfriend sometimes says "you're obsessed," haha. Most people think it's cool, surprisingly. And "jocks" like coins too, I'm a college athlete! (D1-track & field)

The only girl who's ever teased me about coin collecting........... IS MY WIFE !! ....... But my advice is to just ignore any "criticism" from others, and continue to build your passion and love for coins. For those who express interest and facination with this hobby, by all means, share with them. For those who don't......just keep it private and smile back and let the comments bounce right off you. And remember, it's historically correct and often said: ........ COIN COLLECTING IS THE SPORT OF KINGS !

Yeah there is the occasional smart jock. My brother in law was a good track and field runner for Haverford University. He did double 800 on his SAT's and went on the Cal-Tech. Presently working as a Senior Chemist at Dow. My sister was a Chem fanatic so they hooked up in the lab. She's an interesting character - power reader and a cooking fanatic so she's always at the stove with a book in one hand and a spoon in the other doing rapidly one handed page flips. It is a real sight to see!

I had one guy try to do that. I just told him I was selling a 1/2 ounce 2008 Buffalo; told him the current value and his jaw almost bounced off the pavement. He suddenly wanted to collect coins. He was fun to watch: .

I have not read all the responses but there are very few people know that I collect coins. Those that do may say some things like why are you always looking at those things or why are you taking another picture of that coin but I have never been made fun of for doing so, at least not to my face

Back in the Silver @ $5/oz. days, someone said: "That cheap ******* (DNA) is always pawing through his change looking for old silver coins." Now: Silver's at $29/oz. Everyone else is pawing through their change looking for the coins I pulled from circulation in the 1980's.

I had a few friends really make some fun when I started coin dealing as my main source of revenue, I'm 23 so only recently finished Uni. One year in and I earn more money than all of them - and strangely enough the making fun has stopped, and I start getting more and more curious questions from them. Coin collecting is not only a facinating hobby, theres great money to be made. Give it a year or two and the comments will go the other way, just hold out!

mere mortals will always mock what they dont understand. I think the best thing to do is just ignore them. besides in todays world/economy especially with all the hype about silver/gold ; I dont want anyone to know other then very close friends/family what is in my safe. and on a side note while showing off your knowledge is good boost for the ego, sometimes it can backfire i.e do we really want more rollsearchers?

Welcome and thanks for the great thread. My only good point: Do your thing!
I don't recall any teasing as a kid but air force brats tended to be tolerant of varying lifestyles.
I get the loving tease from my wife "What you doing, playing with your pennies?", comeback, "What you doing, facebooking?"
My daughter at 25 asked me "Why?" but it was earnest. She wanted to know.
Just turned my first cousin (female, 50ish) on to her own wheat cents. I was talking to her last night and I said "Careful, you'll get hooked" she said she already had.
