Collector receives PCGS MS69 Gold Buffalo from APMEX with a struck-through metal chip on Indian's cheek. The flaw was missed by PCGS graders. APMEX agrees to exchange or refund for the coin. Collector decides to keep it, but drills into slab to remove metal chip. Many people, including myself tried to talk him out of tampering with the slab. It's enough to make a collector cringe. But it's his coin and he sort of did it on a dare. Excellent pics of entire train-wreck at above link. If I am violating any rules please nuke this post. http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.ht...=5&t=1120619Edited by tnwalker10 12/03/2010 10:22 pm

Uh oh! Sorry for the dupe. I'm the one that told him to come here but I thought he didn't.

I read his thread here yesterday. Just finished the ar15.com thread. All I can do is ask why did this guy even waste his time with pics and posts? It seems he had already made up his mind what he was gonna do in the first place. I would have sent it back and asked for a new one. APMEX would have gladly exchanged it no questions asked. They may have even thrown him a bone or two in the form of a common date Morgan or Peace, or maybe a $25 gift certificate. Who knows?

Put the whole subject of drilling the slab aside. It is a situation like this one that has made me lose confidence in PCGS. You have this coin graded an MS69. How does this coin make it through 3 "experienced, world class graders" and make it through "verification" for quality control. Now, I understand that there was a huge number of these coins that had gone to PCGS and it is an assembly line and it takes the grader about 30 seconds to make up his mind.......but to go through 3 graders and verification.........I don't know? Even lately NGC has me wondering I have found better consistency with ANACS and ICG

If you dont pay for error verification they wont do it even if your coin has an obvious error. As for quality control, this coin was actually worth considerably more with the error than it would have been without it. I would much rather buy a struck through buffalo for melt price than a regular one. -XoG

$50 now for error submissions at PCGS Xavier, the fees are getting ridiculous. I remember it was $30.

I live the services PCGS has to offer but I can't figure them out as to their grading. I've never once had a coin returned to me as ungradable by NGC but several times from PCGS just for album toning or the like. I suppose that lends credibility to PCGS being tougher?

Personally I don't think anyone should be ridiculed for what they do with their coin and slab. We should be kinder and set example. Some of that language on that other site made me stop reading at page 1 of a 12 page topic ( so far ). First time I have been there and last probably. CCF is head and shoulders above all the forums I go to for being helpful and friendly and safe for all ages to visit and read. This member may not be back because we think he should have done something different with his coin.
