I thought I'd share this "coin". I purchased it from a gentleman in Virginia who claimed he dug it at a Civil War camp site. You can still see traces of the gold plating. I'm not sure what the base metal is It's badly damaged and corroded but I thought it was cool.

I believe SGS would grade that as AU-58 due to some light wear on the high points

i wonder if its a really old fake ?
maybe someone plated it and passed it off as real back in the day.

I wonder how many years ago the first fakes were made?
I mean we all know the nickels in the 50's

but did jewlers make fake gold coins in the 1800's early 1900's?

some civil war soldiers were know to make fake coins

I have seen some crude dug coins .. made of lead and plated .. from camps in Virginia
