I went back and picked up the 2 1/2 Indian today. This will be the first coin for the future gold page I will add to my 7070. I would say I am happy with this purchase, it is not perfect but just right for my middle class collection. As I was saying yesterday there is a hit on "GOD" and I do see something on the edge, to the right of the date, but not sure what to call it. I did get it for the $170. Please give any opinions good or bad.

Can't ever go wrong with paying spot for a coin with history over bullion any day! I'd buy those all day long for that. Well, until I ran out of money, of course.

$170!? That's dirt cheap these days. A great buy even if it's a problem coin.
It looks fine to me but I'd weigh it and verify diameter/thickness to be of the safe side.
Good Choice!

Nice! Definitely at least XF details, likely AU. I'm not sure what the thing on the rim is next to the date. Was it possibly in jewelry at some point? The rest of the surface looks original though. As long as it's genuine, that was a terrific buy! I dont seen any indication that it's not, but I agree with bherring to weigh and check the diameter and thickness(it should be very similar to a dime).
I would check that shop for other bargain US gold, you may have hit a gold mine there(pun intended)..lol.

XF40=$255, AU-50=$280, and MS60=$350. Any way you grade it, it was a great buy.

I checked the weight at the coin shop, 4.2 grams. RedBook shows it should be 4.18. Also did not pick up with a very powerful magnet. In hand it looks and feels like a real gold coin to me. I am sure I will take it to a couple other coin shops .. just to get a second and third opinion. EDIT: I don't have anything to measure diameter. I think the photo for it in RedBook is to size, it is exactly the same diameter as the one shown in RedBook

Quote: I would check that shop for other bargain US gold, you may have hit a gold mine there(pun intended)..lol. This is one of the coin shops I stop in at least 2 or 3 times a week. I did miss a nice 1924 20 Dollar a couple weeks ago. This shop does sell at good prices. But you have to be there often, buy or lock in the deal before someone else does. Like today, while I was buying this coin, a UNC roll of 1958 Ben Franklin's came in. They were in the bank wrapped roll but they opened them to make sure what they were. After the seller left, they offered them to me for 20X face. I told I would be back tomorrow with some silver and trade up. They agreed.

Almost certainly authentic well struck, accurate details, wear evident and extremely consistent with a genuine AU.

I was wondering in 1915, what would be the need for a 2.5 dollar coin?

I think the primary need for all these coins was that the U.S. was still on the Gold standard. They had a $10 Eagle so it made sense to do Double Eagle ($20), Half Eagle ($5), and Quarter Eagle ($2.50) to fulfill smaller requests for the metal. The really odd one is the $3 Gold. There is some speculation that came out since stamps at the time were 3 cents and, hence, a $3 Gold could buy exactly 100 stamps. Odd stuff...
