Before I send this out as a christmas gift. I thought I would find out if there is any type VAM I could look for. I hope the pictures are good enough, first time I tried taking a pic of a coin in a Slab It is a 1883 O morgan in a NGC slab .. MS 64 there is a die crack that runs from the neck to the forth and fifth star. Should I look for anything else.

From the photos I can't see anything that is in the top 100 or 50 but it's still a nice pair!

It is VAM 53. Doubled Ear & Top of Phrygian Cap 53 III228 ยท C3a (Doubled Ear & Top of Phrygian Cap) (181) I-2 R-5 Obverse III228-- Ear slightly doubled at right inside. Top of Phrygian cap slightly doubled as are US UNUM letters at bottom inside towards rim. It is not rare relatively speaking, but I would consider it scarce.

Ozland, as usual, to the rescue with absolute fact. The rarity of Morgan varieties does not always equate to value, because the equation is demand + rarity = value. There are still not a large number of collectors seeking Morgans by variety, which reduces demand for all but a small percentage of the most prominent varieties. Added to which, the rarity scale is a liquid thing; we're discovering more information every day which clarifies previous opinion as to rarity. Don't forget, VAM's are still a work in progress. We're probably not even halfway yet. Wrap your gifts. They're pretty cool, if you ask me. If you're giving up value, it's potential value, at a point in the future where (I suspect) your recipients will be in a better position to exploit it than you or I will.

In discussing potential variety value, I suspect the time Super Dave talks about is way off in the future and quite possibly never. Super Dave is correct when he says there are not a large enough number who collect by varieties.
The nice part is if you are giving this to a variety collector, that would be a way cool gift.

thats a pretty cool crack that almost encircles the entire coin...if it was a Peace dollar I'm sure it would have a better rating....a very nice gift!!

It is Christmas time, and I have been bubbly and silly now for at least a week, but lots of really wonderful things happen in this season, and Oz, your return here makes my eyes burn brightly..... I had fears that you may have been swallowed up by the dealer site, never to return.... 95% of the folks are really good people, but there is a very ugly clique that seems to run the place..... I miss the good people, and you were at the very top of my miss list....I am so happy to see that you are strong enough to visit here as well.

Thank you Zee. I don't tend to stay away long. However there are many times I really don't have much to say or contribute. I am on (forced) hiatus from the other site. I was leaving anyways. The hypocrisy and issues of censorship were too much for me. Interesting aspect was I violated no rules or protocol. I had a dissenting opinion. Vamming can be a very rewarding hobby, but I am stopping VAM collecting for a while, maybe permanently. I am assessing the premise of Vamming and my role in it.

Don't be ridiculous Terry....If you care anything at all about the hobby, and the great many friends that you have made in it, you will wake up and realize that you are EXACTLY what the hobby needs if it is to flourish.....The hobby could not only survive, but would actually grow without those to whom you refer, but you are an inspiration to the collector, to those who wish to enter into the hobby....The new folks need someone who will tell the truth without sugar coating...... nobody wants to be lied to when they ask questions, so it is very important to have a collector such as yourself to ask those questions of (rather than a dealer). Your presence is not only very important here, but vitally important at the other place, (for the sake of the good folks there), they NEED you, whether you know it or not....do not abandon them out of disgust for a few....It is Christmas time....go back, but go back as a the lion that I know you are, you will not grovel.

To a certain extent what I think the hobby is confronted with is a stacked deck and a rigged hand. The people you refer to are not bad people. But what is clear is the illusion of an open friendly academic atmosphere there is nothing but a facade. Make no mistake, members there are groomed and targeted as potential customers by strong dealer interests. The dealers see this as a benign benefit that creates no harm as their interests are tied to growth in the hobby. They want no interference to change that dynamic and what is unstated, any discussion that brings that aspect in to public view. I see this influence as much too self serving and a conflict of interest. But I am just one voice.

honestly just about everything is all about the money Terry, it really doesn't matter what topic we look at, that's how they make there living and profit, I am just saying and thinking......we are here for the ideas and understandings not for the money in principle..... and many of us are here for the same reason......time to lay back perhaps, but never to be pushed out.......there is an honest need here from honest people...and not to promote the money game but for the love of the principles and the understandings of how these things came to be......
