Purchased one lot of coins recently and along
with them a coffee can full of wheats/indians/steelies etc. As I was counting out 1000 (to be sold here later as one lot) I found this 52-D
Not a gem by any means but a pretty decent example of a Cud. Also notice the missing letters (PLU) on the reverse directly opposite the rim Cud. I forgot the name of this type of Cud when the missing lettering phenom occurs. By the way, this coin along with a few "surprises" :) will be added to the lot of 1000 wheats I will be posting soon for sale. Decided to have some fun and make up a batch of wheats etc. to sell for a very reasonable price. Stay tuned :)

There is no "name" for it other than Cud. It's nice!

O.K. thanks. I heard the term Retained Cud so I thought
there were different types. Should they all have the same
reverse attribute (i.e.: missing devices) or vice versa if the Cud is on the rev. If this coin had no Cud then the reverse area in question
would just be called a debris filled die (grease)
Was just trying to figure out the whole process to cause both of the
results on the obv. and rev.

A Retained Cud is a part that has started to fall off the die, but is still there for a time.

The design is slightly altered because of the split on the die. The opposite side is not affected as their is part of the die still present giving resistance to planchet shaping the two sides of the coin. On a Cud, the opposite side of the coin is not shaped because there is nothing to put resistance on the opposite side of the coin. Thus the missing details on the opposite side of the coin:

A struck through error is caused by normal dies that has some debris in the die allowing one or both sides to be affected. After the obstruction is removed the die starts making normal coins again.

Cuds are caused from cracked/broken dies. Struck through errors from clogged dies.

F.Y.I.
This coin has been added to my 1000K
lot of wheats for sale. See post.
I'm sure someone would like to have it for
only a nickel. Whoop's 5.5 cents :)
