Was photographing some duplicates for sale and came across this PCGS MS66 1944-S Jefferson. The obverse is unremarkable (although in lovely condition) ......... but the reverse is split vertically by one huge die crack that literally bisects the coin.

The interesting part is that the upper end of the crack flows through the mintmark ...... giving the S the appearance of a $ sign.

Wondering if anyone has seen this before?

Some photos ....

It is actually two die cracks that are heading to join together after several more strikes. Then they get interesting.

I say you are correct as usual coop ..... in hand the lower die crack crosses the steps above "T", follows the 3rd column and can be lightly seen crossing the triangle below the dome.

The 'only' portion of the reverse die that has not cracked vertically is across the dome itself ....... but the lower and upper cracks are in perfect alignment ....... waiting for just a few more strikes to join together.

I bet things became interesting then.

Shameless plug for my checkbook here Scooby .... Yes it is.

Who knows ...... perhaps 20 years from now I'll be kicking myself for selling off the highest graded example of what will then be reverently known at the 1944-$ error coin.

These are actually fairly common. I have a few of them, and pass by them all the time at shows while going through dealer stock for doubled dies and repunched mintmarks.

I believe there are actually several different $ die cracks varieties in the War Nickels.
