Die wear is correct John1. Wear always flows toward the rim. This is a classic example.

And if you look ont he outside edge of the last 5 of the date you will probably see the same effect to a degree - the 5 will have a shadow of a hump next to it. This is what people called the "1955 poor man's double die" and sold for $5-$10 a coin back in the day. Heck, they still do it! And these things aren't worth anything more than any other 1955 cent.

These occur frequently on cents minted in 1929, 1946, 1953, 1954, and 1955. Why those specific years? Dunno...just a fact.
