I see a damaged date, like it is smashed or scratched.

PCGS wouldn't grade it, they said Damage or Tooling Wrapping Machine.
My question is whats the easiest way to spot this? I knew something was up with the date but is that the only reason they won't grade it?

It would have graded nicely, the fields are very clean.
Few hits on the buffalo leg and I think a scratch above the braid but
the damage on the date and liberty caused pcgs to deem it ungradable evidently.
They only like "problem free coins" for grading and the damage to this coins is unnatural.

It looks like the ber in liberty is affected with the same condition as the date. Would a wrapping machine cause that kind of damage? It is really strange that one would put a coin such as this one in a wrapping machine if it could cause that much damage. The coin is really nice and I don't think that the smashed/smooshed in date is all that bad. What about NGC? They would probably put it in a body bag also with "altered surfaces" or something to that affect. This is to bad and I'm sorry that it didn't get slabbed.
