I believe I have asked this question before but I want everybody's input again. I am ready to bite the bullet and spend the money to invest in a 1909s vdb. For the most part my entire collection consists of original raw coins. When I make this purchase, which will probably be via ebay, I want to purchase this coin graded. I know nothing about the different grading companies. Which grading companies are known to be the most trustworthy and accurate? Thanks for any help and/or advice as I begin my search for this coin. Oh yeah...I have around $1000 to spend...Should I be able to find a decent 09s vdb for this amount? Thanks again!

I would think for a grand, you should be able to get one in the VF range. If you're going to buy slabbed, stick with the 3 "big ones".
PCGS will probably cost you more (or a lesser grade for the same money), the better bargain may be the NGC or ICG slabbed coins. They just don't seem to have the "slab premium" for similarly graded coins.

A quick glance of completed listings on ebay shows me that if your patient you can get one under $1000. I think most people believe PCGS and NCG are the best in grading but they will chime in if I'm wrong. Good luck. Wish I could bite that same bullet.

I would look for something graded with PCGS or NCG. Good luck and if you are buying from ebay make sure the seller has been on ebay a longtime and has a good rating.

Personally, I would probably buy one someplace in person that was graded by ANACS NGC or PCGS. That dealer doesn't have to pay $200.00 in ebay and Paypal fees. You get to look it over as long as you want. Then you get to dickering. I wouldn't bust through the doors saying I'm buying a 1909 S VDB today! Look around for a half hour then maybe ask about key date Lincolns. Then ask a best price, you might get a nice one that way.

Another place you might consider is Heritage auctions - coins.ha.com. I buy quite a bit on ebay, but on higher end certified stuff, I think you can get a better price on Heritage. You also know exactly who you are dealing with when buying as well, which is a plus on higher end stuff. Looking at the Heritage archive, it looks like many certified 1909-S VDB's in the VF-20 to VF-30 range went for $900-1000.

PCGS,NGC,or ANACS...one thing to keep in mind is that ANACS has gotten very conservative with the new yellow holders. Some on here don't like that, but you are more likely to get a better grade coin for your money that way. Take your time and shop around. I've gotten some good deals off ebay and don't see where the sellers fees have any effect on final price.

I agree with Wheezy, buy this one in person. I will need to buy one at some point. When I do, I will buy one at a coin show.
I have been scouting this one for years now and find that there are plenty to choose from, even raw. I really do not care who grades it or if it is raw. I want the coin for an album, so any slab will be opened.
I keep seeing these same dealers at the shows, so my confidence in buying raw pieces has increased. However, I do not think I am quite ready to buy one, even if it is certified. I want to know this coin so well that I am 100% confident that the one I finally purchase is genuine.

For the love of God, buy this coin in person. This is a big decision and you really need to see the coin in person before buying. I suggest waiting a big coin show near you and buying it there. You should have several to choose from if the show is big enough.
Normally, I tell people to only buy these slabbed. However, if you're at a big show you can buy raw and then have it "authenticated" by other dealers at the show. You should be able to get many opinions on authenticity and grade before you leave the show. If the other dealers think it's a dud, you can still take it back to the table where you bought it and get your money back.

After BadThad slapped me around a couple of times, I decided to heed his advice as well. I've been getting educated on the coin and will hopefully bring one home from the F.U.N. show. I know they will be there, it's just a matter of whether I can't stop spending until then.

Thanks everybody for the advice...I have waited this long so I can for sure wait until a show comes around my area. The reason I was convinced to buy this slabbed is because of all the horror stories I hear about counterfeits and I will be the first to admit that sometimes I can't tell if a coin is genuine or not. I will post pictures once I finally have one in my possession.

Quote: The reason I was convinced to buy this slabbed is because of all the horror stories I hear about counterfeits... There is no shame in admitting that. It does add confidence, and if I had to buy one today it would be in a slab for that reason. However, my goal is to not need that extra confidence from the slab.

I can't tell you how many times I walked into a big show with a tight, small list. However, while looking for my coins list I have a knack for finding some supreme coins I simply cannot resist. Then, later in the show, I will find one of coins I actually wanted and don't have enough money to buy it. LOLOLOLOL Side story, I've told here before... The BIG coin for me is the 1936 Lincoln proof. These are nearly impossible to find. At a big show I was intent on buying that blasted 36 proof. Well, I found some unreal coins that I didn't need, mainly some toners that were unique and irresistible, so I spent a ton of cash. Near the end of the show I found a 36 proof and let me tell you....it was KILLER. Just beautiful, brilliant and probably a PR-68. The dealer wanted $800 for it and wouldn't ya know...I only had about $250 to my name because I had just spent $600. ROFL I gave up, there was no way I was taking my bag of prizes back to get that one coin!
