I just found this one. NumiNews & Coins list it @$40 in MS 65. Mine isn't quite that good but it's still nice & brilliant. Are these just pie in the sky values or is this a nice find ?

Just over polished dies that removed the letters. It not a mint error, it just a very worn/over polished die.

Isn't that the same situation with the 1922 plain cent? A lot of hoopla (and money)about overpolished dies.

And the three legged buffalo. Making something about what isn't there, when it was when the die is new. Just something to place in collecting books to create interest in something that is really nothing.

I have a couple of rolls of the 1982-P No 'FG' halves. Anyone interested in them?

The BU 82 & 83 are better priced ones for the series. I would keep them just to sell in time. There were no mint sets sold to the public these years. The only way you could get a mint set was to go to each mint and buy them there for each mints coin only. Thus the higher prices for those two years.

I've always been a little confused about this particular area,If a mint worker overpolished the devices off a die isn't he changing the dynamics of the die from its original state creating an mistake or error on that said die, that in turn produces a coin with that paticular mistake or error on it? Why is the coin not considered a mint error when it came from the mint not intended to look this way?

The over polishing was done to remove the clashes that happen over and over on dies when a planchet doesn't fall between the dies. So it was intentional to remove the clash, but the end result was removing the letters. A part of the minting process. An error is something that usually happens only once. Die wear/polishing/clashes/cracks/chips/breaks are just run of the mill stuff. Wrong metals/broad strikes/capped dies/brokerages/indents/off centers/ETC which are one time occurrences are errors. The run of the mill stuff is just part of the minting process.

PM sent.

I think the picture above is a great example of this somewhat well known missing initials half dollar.
Some of these you can still see a faint trace of FG yet sellers try to sell them as "no initials".
For me, I would collect one like that, for others it is no big deal. Both opinions on whether it is a collectible coin are up to the individual.

I would say this is worth keeping, but you never know what people are going to consider an "error" later on. For $.50 why not...
