My wife purchased (from a seemingly reputable dealer in Houston) a 1909 s vdb to complete my collection for me for a Christmas present. She paid $1300. Mine is certified by NGC, but I am skeptical because the grading doesn't mention the missing L. Thoughts? Grease? Value?
NGC certification is 1510198-002 Grade XF 45

Welcome Bluecatty. Please provide a picture of the coin. That is the only way to show what you are talking about. Sounds like a nice gift!

I like the flow lines in the mintmark as they run exactly the same as the background, just like grain on a board. I can see a faint L on Liberty. Looks OK to me, I don't look at many of this key coin so I don't know how many others are found with a weak L.

It also appears to be a RPM S over S. Now maybe I really don't see the L at all?

Beautiful coin. Seems genuine to me. Have you contacted NGC just to make sure?

I was wondering about an RPM, too. Pics are a little dark for my old eyes.

I'm thinking the missing L is probably just a Grease Filled Die. I don't think it adds or detracts from the value. Personally, I really like the look of the wood grain of this coin, especially the reverse. Nice!

Yep, looks like a Grease Filled Die resulting in the absence of the L. That is one great looking coin! That wood grain is really attractive. Give your wife a kiss, and tell her how much you love her, that's a nice coin ;-)
