Spot price of silver last I checked was at $30.59. I am seeing ASE bullion coins selling from 33-35 each, with some on the Bay going higher for some peculiar reason. 90% silver quarters are worth $5.53 melt value each. This puts melt value at $27.65 for a set of 5.

I just picked up various years of state silver proof quarter sets for $23-$27 each, with access to many more for this price. This is under melt value for coins that do not suffer loss from wear and tear like pre-65 junk silver does.

Is there something I am missing here? The reason these aren't being snagged up at these prices. These seem like the best bang for your buck if your into hoarding silver.(Yes, I hoard, and have for over 10 years now)

I don't think you're missing anything. You're just doing the math and picking up some coins a lot of folks aren't interested in, but you're right about the silver content. Go for it! (in my opinion)

I've seen this, also. I picked up ten sets for an average of less than 20 dollars apiece a few months ago. I think they are not as popular because people who hoard silver like we do are more interested in pre 65 junk so that if it our economy ever got so bad that we had to actually use silver to purchase items, a 64 quarter would be more widely accepted as 'real' silver than say a 2005 State Quarter that you tell them is silver (some people can't tell the difference).

I think your logic (and math) makes sense. Good idea.

One question - where do you find them?

I'm pretty sure Mitch is correct about the more recognizable form being the Pre-65 items. But as a "Stacker", I see these as a great opportunity. If the SHTF and I hand a guy 5 encased quarters that say "Silver Proof Set", and he won't take them, I'll buy my tomatoes elsewhere!

Especially at the price of silver. What's also amazing is that the US Mint is selling its 2010 Silver ATB sets now for $32.95. I just picked up a bunch. If silver goes to where projected this year, good for all of us. Sure like to fall into what you did.

You can find these sets on ebay. Search "Silver Proof Quarters" and some should come up. I do what I refer to as "Shotgun" bidding. I bid on all of the sets available. I put in my max bid (some price just below spot) as my first bid and if I don't win it, so be it. However, with this method you had better have the money to cover all of it 'cause you may win 'em all. Realistically, I win about 10% of the auctions this way. But it is a good way of getting silver below spot. I agree with you, AyeJay. It is a great way to get silver below spot and there will always be buyers for it. I keep mine in the 'lenses' also because it says they are silver.

There is one small detail most people miss when it ocmes to the price of Silver, Gold, Copper or anything in metals. Just where are you going to sell it for what people say it is worth? OK so Silver is valued at over $32/Ounce. So just where do you sell it for that? Yes you could probably buy it for that but just where would, could, might you sell it for what you say it's worth? Yes hoarding Silver, Gold or anything may or may not pay off but always remember that what ever you have is only really worth what you can sell it for.
I have several old cars and hear all the time that one of them could, might, should, maybe be worth a small fortune since only 477 were made. SO WHAT? If I can't sell it at all right now, it's not worth anything except fun. Same with anything. Remember the Beanie Babies? I know lots of people that hoarded those and now find they are selling for about $1 each. And the ones thsy horaded? No one wants to buy them at all.
IF your saving, hoarding, stockpiling anything for tomorrow, you should sit down and try to find out where you can sell them tomorrow. Or even today?
Of course you could apply for a job on the HSN TV program and try selling all your Silver there.

And an afterthought. AyeJay. I'm pretty sure you were being facetious about the buying tomatoes. ;) However, if we can help it we should be growing our own food. If it ever gets that bad, the last thing we would want to be doing is spending our silver on items that we can grown or make ourselves. Just a thought.

Carl,

I agree with you. However silver has intrinsic value. It has been a store of wealth since the beginning of mankind, unlike beanie babies, cars or sports cards. Anyone can post an add on craigslist for silver and sell it for spot or just over spot. People come into my coin dealers store daily and buy silver eagles for 36 dollars a pop. So the market is there. I could give you a list of all the reasons silver is doing so well and will do even better in the years to come, but I'm not sure I have the time.

Carl, I believe you're comparing apples to oranges here. Silver and Gold have been used as currencies for thousands of years, Cars and beanies, well never. Pm's are a commodity, store of wealth, not an asset. Beanie Babies could be made all day, every day to saturate the market, just like the Sportscard industry did(I used to own a sportcard shop several years ago) You can't manufacture, make, nor print Precious metals. There is only so much that can be mined. You can look on the bay and see how easy it is to unload silver, Rarely going for spot or under.

Northwest, I just picked up the last 17 sets from my local spot for 25 each. Provident has one year left I believe. I took a bunch of theirs too. And if you're like me, I think long term silver holdings are wise.

You're not missing anything. I've been buying Silver Proof Sets as bullion for years.

Again and again at coin shows, I watch people walk past bargain-priced Silver Proof Sets
and head straight for the tables with junk silver bags.

One show, I bought ten Silver 5-coin State Quarter Proof Sets for $125.
Which worked out to $12.50 each box, or 10x face, which is exactly what
the junk silver bags were selling for a few tables away...
So I got full .1808 ASW weight Uncirculated Silver Proof Quarters for
the same price as average circulated pre-1965 Washington quarters.

just carl:...you should sit down and try to find out where you can
sell them tomorrow. Or even today?

Ever hear of Craigslist? My girlfriend sold a roll of 40% JFK's for full melt value,
and had the cash in her hand three hours after posting her ad.
And:
All of the coin dealers I visit buy and sell silver,
not to mention many pawnshops and jewelry stores.
There's one city block in Denver where you could sell your
silver to eight different businesses on that same block!

So when I'm walking up to the door of a big coin dealer that's bought
$25 million dollars of silver and gold this year alone, and I'm
looking at a row of "We buy Gold and Silver" signs stretching down
the block, let's just say I'm not losing any sleep worrying about
if I can sell my silver when the time comes.

While I'm here, here's another one for the "cash is extinct" crowd to chew on:
Yesterday, the electronic card system at my local McDonald's failed,
and the store was "cash-only" for three hours.
Regrettably, I missed it, because I just love needling reminding
people that cash always works.
When the store manager told me that most of the customers were able
to come up with the cash, I was pleasantly surprised.
It restores a bit of my faith in humanity that most people did
at least have enough cash to get a bite to eat at Mickey D's.

Not like at the drugstore a while back, where the seven people who
were ahead of me in line when the card system crashed had to watch
helplessly as I walked past them to the register, paid cash for my
prescription and walked out laughing loudly as they continued waiting.
