2011 new $1 theme which no doubt will see a few early birds and a new collector getting #1 ,it will not be that old loudmouth man from last year rest assured The iconic image of a rams head will once again grace Australia's newest $1 coin as revealed on New Year's Day at the Royal Australian Mint in Canberra. Originally appearing on the one shilling from 1938 to 1963, the Royal Australian Mint has returned to this familiar design to recognise one of Australia's longest running industries. "This new $1 ram's head coin design continues our celebration in 2011 of Australian wool and the role it played in the development of modern Australia", said Assistant Treasurer, Bill Shorten. The original design of the ram was modelled on a champion Merino at the Annual Sydney Sheep Show in 1932 and came to be known as the "Shilling Ram", Mr Shorten said. "This collectible coin is an exclusive offer and one which will be sought after by many collectors. It is only available to make at our store in Canberra and bears a ‘C for Canberra' mark on it, making it a memento to keep forever," said CEO of the Royal Australian Mint, Mr Ross MacDiarmid. "The dies in the gallery press will be changed to the "Ram's head" design on New Year's Eve, giving one lucky visitor to the Mint on New Year's Day the rare opportunity to strike the very first collector coin for 2011," Mr MacDiarmid said. http://www.ramint.gov.au/media/pres...20110101.cfm

I wonder if the RAM will do the same with Florin, and Sixpence reverses as well, and put them onto the respective 20c. and 5c. coins, AND release them for circulation?

I doubt it. They said that they're doing this to celebrate Australia's wool industry. They may do that in 2016 when it's the 50th anniversary of decimal currency. Heres hoping .

Quote: I wonder if the RAM will do the same with Florin, and Sixpence reverses as well... To an extent, they already did it with the sixpence design when they did the Centenary of the Old Arms in 2008. I rather like this design. Yet, once again, they've put the mintmark in the "wrong place". On the war-year shillings the American mintmarks went below the ram's head and the Perth Mint "dot" went below the left star, not above the right star. I also noted that in the article reporting on this new coin in the Brisbane Courier-Mail today, they had a picture of the wrong coin! They had the dollar from the mint set illustrated instead. Kinda defeats the purpose of the article, methinks.

Its a great looking coin, similar size to the shilling as well,I love it and was there today at launch, the crowd was small so minting them was easy. Doesn't take long for opportunists to list these for huge profits,$3 they cost and they will be available from RAM via mail order (from the main press) regardless what this seller has to say,and the visitor gallery coin from the 2 presses is going for the entire year of 2011.No panic buying these lovely coins http://cgi.ebay.com/2011-MINT-YOUR-...em20b63819a0

He is the first to offer his time and energy in obtaining speciality coins for those unable to attend on the day. He charges nothing for doing this. He spends hours queing and then getting back into the queue so that he has sufficient coins for all the members of the ACBO forum. Last year, he queued from 4pm the previous day so that he might be the first in queue. His 'reward' was a lovely framed certificate and coin. He is on record as not attending this year so that another (anybody) can have the privelege of being first this year. He is travelling from Melbourne to Canberra in February to get coins for those too remote to do so. He labels and packages the coins like an expert (which he is). Rest Assured that while there are 'loud mouthed' men such as Goldseeker in this hobby, we are in great shape.

I wonder how many coins the spruiker got for others? Don't ever recall seeing any offers to do so either.

I love the Ram's head design (in case you couldn't tell), but I can't see me heading to Canberra any time soon. Steve

Interesting that RAM press release did not mention the 1991 50¢ ramshead -a very popular coin with collectors.

That's an interesting titbit of information jonsopet, I am sure the RAM press release said these C mm dollars would only be available from the RAM! Oh well, I bet they come out in a 4 or 5 coin set soon anyway just like the mintmark dollars from last year.
