many have humble opinions of what they look upon a coin when they want to buy or look upon a coin a coin and have an idea of what the grade is.....what is your opinion and why?

Quote: what is your opinion and why? I'll go with questionable authenticity..... because I can't see it well enough to tell what it is.

Just in case that wasn't right, I will try MS-64...... because it looks like it has lots of hair detail, and also because I don't know how to grade.

I would grade it at AU 55 because of the wear on the hair above the ear. I could be a bit higher grade but I lose too much detail when I zoom in on your picture.

I would not attempt to grade based upon such a small photograph.

If you keep in mind ANY TPG'r has the coin in hand when grading, the pictures are not going to help......PLEASE post clearer, closer pictures.

I kinda think that the pictures are that size for a reason...

I do like to see the how and why's of members grading opinions, this would, IMO, be a new way of doing this and really believe people could learn more from an opinion, with an explanation, then just the opinion of, MS62.......
"the pictures are that size for a reason".....If this IS true, I will refrain from a guesstimate.........PS, I can say, Zee, this my friend, is a whole different world of Numismatics, Another one of those practice makes "almost" perfect sense, LOL. While I know you have a obvious sense about the nuts and bolts of the coining, I really believe you could do well at this also. Gene, A very positive step in the learning process on this forum, especially the "how and why part. Like in school, PLEASE explain your answer. I look forward to members opinions on this subjective topic!!

Good idea morgansdad!
Based on the pictures, as they are, I cannot tell if there is toning and/or dirt around the edges/stars. The dark area around the obv stars appear to be grime. The other dark area around the obv edge appears to be toning. The rev appears to be toning, but again, small pic. There also appears to have some Unc finish remaining. At first I was going to say AU to 61 and possibly cleaned, but I'll hold on that thought and go with AU to 61. This is an 'O', so I am not suprised at the weak strike showing above the ear and on the breast. That does no rule out a BU to me. My humble opinion only.

Quote: the weak strike showing above the ear and on the breast. Okay, this is an area in which my lack of familiarity with this design leaves me out in the cold.... I see what appears to me to be plenty of detail in those areas as well as everywhere else on this coin.... Whenever you deem it appropriate, could you show some nice photos of this coin and point out to me just what characterizes a "weak strike"? Thanks Gene.

Zee, I would suggest to you and others, In order to know how to grade or "judge" a coin, I would recommend looking at the best mint graded coin you could find to know how the coin should look and then apply the "look" to any coin you are giving a grade to. It is not quite that easy but a good point to start from. This does not take into account the years coins were not struck well, the mints involved and the problems we know were going on at those mints, theres a big difference between an 1881-S coin and a coin struck at the New Orleans mint, which is known for the weaker struck coins compared to San Francisco mint and others.......IMO.

I take all of your comments, welcomed...The people on this particular part of coins are well RIGHT to reserve an answer due to pictures that not allow a "true assessment" of the coin....My eyes often roll back on the grading section of ccf as many a post is give with really crappy pictures....many not well focused,, and many a grand grade is given... AS I HAD HOPED. ..responsible people would simply say..."the pictures not good enough for a true assessment.... not that is a terrible picture, but certainly not good enough if one was actually considering buying it.....This is one of the things about buying online as well...poor pictures abide and profit...I'll post some better pictures now that I'm home...

Thanks Mike, that makes good sense.... I don't own any coins, so I can only compare online photos, and I often misinterpret them. I really think that the New Orleans Mint did a great job considering the uneven playing field involved. (Just thought that I would throw that in there)...
