I'm new to coin collecting and I need help in figuring out Morgan dollars. I presently have 5 and after reading some of the forum I am wondering if what I thought were scratches are VAM? I'm not even sure what VAM is but if anyone can help me learn how to identify die marks & any other info on them thank you Lee.

You can start off by posting some close ups of 1 coin at a time. When trying to help out it becomes overwhelming to help ID 4 coins at once. The size that seems to work for me is about 540x540 with good resolution. Full shots of the Obverse (front) Reveres (back) of just the coin just use you photo program to crop them.
And we can go from there.
BTW Welcome to CCF Russ

no need to go to another site, if you can do what twohawks said we will try and help you attribute your coins here. Every Morgan and Peace dollar is a VAM but it takes practice to determine which one you are looking at. We have some knowledgeable VAMmers in this group that are happy to help so if you can get some pictures of your coins and post them we will do our best to help you

Quote:I am wondering if what I thought were scratches are VAM? Lee, are the scratches raised like ridges or are they dug into the coin like valleys? (That usually makes all the difference). Can you figure out how to post pictures?

good evening all, and welcome to the Forum Lee..Just post your photo's and lets have a look at them. Many here already have experience with researching Vams, and can help you learn at the same time with out you doing it alone. If your not sure how to post or take pictures , you can still be helped there to Gene

rlcb- welcome to CCF! You found the right folks to talk to and get opinions. You'll get alot of them. Alot of knowledge here. Read, Read and Look and Look. Takes time. VAM World is very good with lots of pics. Get the Red Book for Morgan silver dollars and any other reference material. There is an abundance of info on line also.

One of the 1887's I have has what appears to be an indentation on the lower neck
One of the 1887's I have has what appears to be an indentation on the lower left side of the neck. Also several marks on the cheeck area a indentation above the eye & in front of the nose. The Eagle has 7 feathers. Does this mean anything? On the inside the leaves left side there is a mark that starts on the second leaf & goes down to the tip of the third leaf. I'm going to figure out how to do pictures as soon as possible. Sorry description is all I can do at the moment.
