Two of the first coins I've received in 2010. Both came out of PCGS plastic and now reside in my 7070. Guess the grade if you like. Sorry the pics aren't too great. The coins look a lot... noisier than they are in hand. I'm not sure if it's the lighting, or how long I'm leaving the shutter open for -- any suggestions welcome.

The Morgan looks like an easy MS-63 and possible for MS-64. I expect the digital photos exaggerate the bit of chatter on Liberty's cheek. The fields look a bit hazy but that shouldn't hurt the grade.

The Peace dollar looks like MS-64, with outstanding brilliant luster.

Both coins are common dates with very nice eye appeal which makes them perfect for your album. Be sure to save your PCGS tags for future resale. A new buyer might pay a higher price if you have the tags to show.

MS-63 to MS-64 on the Morgan dollar, MS-65 for the Peace dollar the scorching hot white blazing luster totally overwhelms a few trivial marks.

The 1881-S Morgan is a classic example of the San Francisco Mints work, high pl like luster, I do not see much wear or rub on the obverse, very baggy small marks and while the coin has plenty of bag marks the coin is well struck and has very crisp details, the slice on Anna's face or lower jaw is distracting which will take away from the over all grade, but not all that much, I see some wear on the cap and actually not much any where else, the reverse again shows the classic details of the SF mints work and pl like finish, I see some small dings around the rim, which would affect the grade also, some very, very minute wear at the eagle's wing tip, left side, again a baggy side also, I am very impressed with the preservation the coin seems to exhibit,I am concerned about the toning, or the lack of it with a coin 121 years old and NO SIGN of any toning, this is a troubling sign for me,I would like to ask if the PCGS plastic slab the coin came from was an old one or not, I with all considered would give this Morgan a grade of MS-64+PL.

The Peace dollar the obverse exhibits a possible strike -thru grease in spots, I see the weak lettering in LIBERTY, I also see wear in Theresa's hair, above the date and the word trust.I see the distracting facial mark on her face which is going to take away from the grade some what, but is an other wise unremarkable coin's side.

The reverse is also a possibly a struck through coin's side based on the weak lettering above the eagle, I also see many small bag marks, and what appears to be a weak strike in some areas, especially the eagle's body, which shows some scratches and what I would call an example of the results of the strike thru, IE the eagle's right leg details, do NOT resemble wear, but is more a strike sign. The Peace dollar is notorious for not many strong strikes and this coin IMO,both coins are very busy with all the small baggy marks, but would grade a MS61-62.This is just my opinion, which is a very subjective topic and will vary from the perspective of the person doing the grading.......

morgans_dad, thanks for the well thought out response. Both coins were in recent PCGS slabs. I'll post grades sometime tomorrow (the 8th). Thanks again :)

I'll be shocked if PCGS graded that Peace dollar lower than MS-64. SHOCKED!

You can expect that with digital coin photography. Enough light to properly show the coin will create shadows and contrast with small marks which exaggerates the actual in-hand appearance - cameras are cruel little beasts.

I'm gonna guess the Morgan at 63 and the Peace at 64.

They are way too harsh on Peace dollars MS-64+ is a great grade but if I were writing a text on grading I would think about citing that as a Quintessential MS-65.

I'd marry that coin.
