Thought I'd post one of 2 91-cc Spitting Eagles I picked up recently. Hasn't arrived yet, so the pics are what the seller posted.

this is one of my favorite VAM's thats not a 1878. They aren't rare and not all that high but I love them for some reason

Yes, I agree Bryan, I like it because of the main feature..... I remember seeing something a good while back that the owner (I think that it was coxe) called the drooling eagle... I didn't know much at the time, but looking back on it now, it was probably just PMD as I recall the drool extending straight down out of the beak halfway to the eagle's chest.

I also remember something about an "impaled eagle" that seemed to be more myth than fact as it sold on ebay for $1800 or more and then turned out to be PMD rather than the Holy Grail.

Maybe it is the nicknames given to these coins that sparks the interest factor?

It is estimated that sixty percent of the extant remaining mintage of 1891-CC is VAM 3 Spitting Eagle.
The VAM 3 Spitting Eagle is a top 100 coin. It is also considered a 'gateway' coin that is used to entice people into the VAM hobby.

Zee, I do know of an "impaled eagle" VAM 1F, only an 1887-P , I have NOT heard of any others, but that does not mean there are none......

The coin I mention is 1880-O VAM 2A Mike..... Interesting stuff.

Interesting in that it had the experts fooled for a long, long time.... ebay bidding was spirited and it took several of experts to get the bidding up that high on a coin in such condition...

I'm no 'expert', but even I could tell what that impalement is... there are similar coins on ebay right now starting at around $60k.... If the price was just a little bit lower, it might go.
