I pulled this coin from a roll from the bank several years ago. this was the only non-plated coin in the roll. I also went back to the bank and bought the rest of the rolls they had and still this was the only one.

I was told by 1 dealer that water or moisture did it, but I dont know. The images attached are at 35X.......any ideas?

Planchet possibly missed the cleaning process after annealing.

This coin is similar to a Canadian Loonie that I posted a couple of weeks ago. My coin is missing about half the plating on one side.
Rest in Peace

I thought the Presidential dollars were a clad coin and not a plated coin.

I have a few that look like that... carry an MS on in your hand for awile and sweat on it... it'll come out looking like that... I also believe they are clad...not plated.

The golden dollar planchets are indeed clad and not plated. A coin missing both outer clad layers would be noticeably light and it would not have the same level of detail as a normal coin because of the thinness of the planchet. The John Adams dollar has sustained environmental damage.

looks like it spent sometime in a wishing well

most decorative pools and water fountians use alot of chemicals that cuase coins to oxadize

As a teenager cleaning pools one summer I had to remove 100's of dollars in change from a concrete landscaping pond.
Under water you sweep the coins into piles withe a strong broom and scoop um out.
the damage is very corrosive to copper coins and not quite as bad to nickle clad.

i suspect the dollar coins are very high in copper and corrode eazy
