Need help trying to identify this contaminant. I've tried MS70 and soaking in olive oil, neither of which made any difference. Should I go with something stronger like Ezest? Do you think acetone would help? Should I just leave it as is? It's a 1928-p so I want to do right by this coin. Thanks.

Acetone is your friend on this one. It will dissolve the glue and not effect the coin though it looks like it has been abrasively cleaned in the past.

Soak it first in water to see if that loosens the glue. If that does not work, acetone should get rid of it. Quote: It's a 1928-p so I want to do right by this coin. The condition of this coin concerns me, how sure are you that it is not a 1928-S with a removed mintmark that was then scrubbed to obscure evidence of tooling?

Thanks, I'll try acetone. It definitely has heavy cleaning marks. The front is even more apparent. Biokem, I purchased this at a consignment auction, so I can't really be sure of anything. I kind of see what you might be looking at in the picture, but looking at the coin under magnification, the luster is very even in the area where a mint mark would be.

Under the "O" in one, I think I see a faint "S" mint mark.

Or a "D"? to CCF my friend. Keep that coin away from E-Z-est. MS70 was too strong to use also but that's a lesson learned and the coin was probably harshly cleaned prior to you handling it. Acetone is your best bet and in the future - seek advice first - MS70 is a strong cleaner that should rarely be used.

The OP would have a real find if it was a D

My point was I want to clean it up without degrading it further. It's sitting in acetone now. I really dont think there's anything to the mint mark. I do see a mark that looks like a D shape, but as biochemist pointed out, there is no 28-d. I'll post some more pictures after I take it out of the acetone.

just soak them in a mixture of olive oil and distilled water. keep if for 30 minutes. then use a mild detergent, brush the glue with a soft brush, or the glue does not go, then use a tooth pick to scratch the glue completely.
warm wishes.

The purported "D" mark doesn't matter anyways; that's not where the mint mark would be.

Update: I left it in acetone for around 24 hours and most of the glue was dissolved, but not all of it. Should I put in back in for longer? Is there any time limit on how long to leave it in there? Thanks for the help.

Acetone will not hurt coins. Go a little longer.

Must be kidding. I would suspect that even kids in 1st grade would know that Olive Oil and water don't mix. Of course you may be referring to those new distilled water Olive trees. Mild detergent? Like LAVA soap for example? Instead of a soft brush, wouldn't a brass wire wheel on a bench grinder work as well? And naturally one should only use a Silver Toothpick.
