I got an email through COINAF asking about the Westminster Mint. Apparently, they sold a $5 gold coin to this person's grandmother. I don't know the details of the coin and I'm hoping that she will join the forum.

This is what I found on the web:
http://twincities.citysearch.com/profile/36505756
http://www.coinoffer.com/

Anyone with any info on this company, please post it here. I'll be emailing the link to this thread to her.

Thanks a bunch.

I have seen coins (medals), at my dealer, that were from the Westminster Mint but thats about it. The medals were marked as .999 silver and when weighed they did weigh out but...? I think Westmister is similar to the old Franklin Mint and are involved in making quite a few collectables with medals and tokens being only a part of what they do. Other than that I just can't help you out!

this isn't them is it? http://www.westminstercollection.com/pc_1716.htm I am sure it isn't but wanted to pass the link along just in case. It looks to me that these coins on this site are real coins but I know nothing about world coins so I am not sure. here is a article about a Westminster Mint also but not sure its the same one either http://www.royalcityrecord.com/issu...1102co6.html

Susan; the only Westminster Mint that I'm aware of is this one:

http://www.westminstercollection.com/

I have only used their services a few times and have been satisfied with the coins received.

I saw that on the web too, but I don't think that's what Susan's looking for. Or maybe it is.

Terry, I was thinking the same thing that they are similar to the Franklin Mint.

Bryan and Old Dan, I don't think that the Westminster Collection site is what she was referring to. She said that her grandmother purchased a US $5 gold coin for $225.00. I do not know the date, therefore I don't know if it was worth it or not. If it was a modern bullion coin, this was a very bad deal. If it was an older half eagle, then it's not so bad.

I'm hoping that she will join the forum and provide all of us with more info.

I'm the 'Granddaughter'!
First, thanks for all the posts/interest.
I'm afraid I'm sensing 'raw deal'!
Indeed, the coin is a 2006 she bought in February for $225. But perhaps some of the following matters:
It is 'First Release' -- I have 118 of 506. It is a tenth an ounce. And perhaps 'MS70' means something?

What really irks me is someone calling a LOL and convincing her that she has the 'opportunity' to buy something valuable. This guy is trying NOW to get her to buy a $10 coin -- mine is $5 -- for over $500. He told her the coins she bought in February are now worth $400. And the more I study, the more I am convinced that is NOT the case. (We checked 'blanchardonline.com' looks like it is $65?!)
Anyway, thanks all! Knowledge indeed is key.
Hmmm, do I get the FTC involved? Thanks again...hdh

PS...
Westminster Mint in Melbourne, Florida.
She has purchased from Franklin Mint in the past...so may have been on their 'hit list.'
Sounds like she paid $160 for a 'handsome display case'...?
(Cheap velvet badly glued inside a mahogany-ish box...that oh! sez "made in china" on the bottom!)

The "first strike" designation is meaningless. That has been being discussed here and I have a dealer friend who deals in high-end coins that has told me and the TPG's that the designation is worthless. The people who are paying a premium for them tend to be those who have not done their research and believe the hype.

Who graded the coin as MS70? If it's not PCGS, NGC, or ANACS, the grade is questionable.

There are many reputable sellers/dealers who she could purchase from online so she wouldn't have to leave her home if that is her desire. If she has a computer, I'd like to see her join the forum. The one thing that we stress most here is that it is necessary to learn about what you are buying before you turn over your cash.

Here's something that was archived from the RCC. It's not much and not too optimistic.

Thanks y'all...it's as I suspected, but sure wish I were wrong.
I guess the 'grade' is from 'ICG' -- that is what is written right before 'MS70'...also 'ICG certified #118 of 506'...
Sounds as though it may never be worth what she paid.
Better to dump it now and buy some cute shoes? ;)
Thanks again so much...hdh

Welcome to the forum, Vakarl. That is the same one that I found on Google, but H-bomb says it's in Florida.

H-bomb, for what it's worth, ICG is the fourth ranked TPG. It is unfortunate that your grandmother paid so much for this coin. Does she have any computer skills at all? We'd love to help her out here if she would join. I would much rather see your grandmother approaching this with some knowledge on her side and we'll all be happy to help with that.
