I know ... I need to post a picture. I will as soon as my wife clears the memory on the camera. She's a teacher, 5000 picture capacity, just isn't enough.

I was going through my silver when I noticed a 1964 d Kennedy with doubling on 'Dollar' along with a couple stars above. Its lightly doubled to the left on all the letters. Also doubled on the 'ate' part of states.

I'm not curious about worth or rarity. I am mostly curious if this is a "double die" , struck odd, or just some common thing that happens.

I know, I know ... pictures... I'll go bug the wife...

After deleting many pictures of the floor and blue sky, I took some pictures of the coin. Uhm, as I now know, it's more complicated then I thought. I did get a decent picture through the eyepiece of my stereoscope, but 'image file' was way too large.

I'll read through the info on the forum on posting pictures, and get up to speed.

That is where you need photo editing software. Get the image the size you wish it to be.

1964-D-Kennedy-Half-DD-Reverse?

Wow, that took me a few tries.

Anyway, I hope the picture is clear enough. My first attempt at photoing a coin. Hopefully the learning curve falls off a bit after this one.

The coin grades out around vf-30. I believe I picked it out of a bank roll a couple years ago. I tubed it with the other 64d's, till I looked at it closer a couple days ago.

Funny, in the Cherry Pickers Guide they list a double die reverse for '65 but not '64 d.

After posting the picture, I found a link from here, somewhere, that brought me to a site that showed great pics of Machine Doubling versus double dies. I thought it was a long shot I'd discover a new variety. Learned something new. Guess I'll 2x2 it and throw it in the curiosity box.

A few years ago I found a double headed nickle! Thought I was rich for sure. Even called my dad and told him about my find. Bet a lot of people here know the rest of that story....

This is Machine Doubling.

BTW, the term is "doubled die" - not "double die."
