If you send it back try to remember what it looks like, then look at a lot of these coins and try to determine which ones might have been cleaned and which ones are original surface. It's not that easy. Some people are good at cleaning coins and the subject is often not mentioned when they are for sale. You have to learn for yourself.
If you keep it you'll have it for a reference.

The seller never sent it because I told him I was going to return it. So, I got my refund. You are right, I have to keep learning how to tell a cleaned coin from a natural coin.

Well, next time you can ask us before you buy,I'm sure it would make some sellers happy although they should describe cleaning or at least advertise the exent of their knowledge.

Quote: If this coin was mine, I would keep it. It appears (to me) to be a nice, problem free VF-30/35 (nice obverse, a little wear on reverse wings, but even) and (again, to me) worth the money you paid.
I like that one. And unless your thinking of going into buisness selling coins, don't worry about cleaning. It looks OK for me. I'd keep a coin like that. Way to many people only think of reselling and not just having fun.

I agree with carl about that..many times people post a coin that they liked and get other opinions..suddenly they don't like it. I don't clean coins but I am not afraid to put the nice ones in my Dansco...after all, it's all about my opinion.

I just wish the seller would have stated the coin was cleaned, but he left it up the buyer to decide for himself.

Some of the older silver circulated still has a little luster around the letters and lady that contrast the wear spots.the coins over all appearance will have a tint to it bluish, redish, rainbowish thats just what silver does over time.
the coin avove is uniform in metal color .

lincolncollector, I know what you mean. But there are sellers that aren't experts, that's why I always look for return policies before bidding. You can choose to buy only slabbed coins or from experts, but there is a cost.In this case you were able to return it and the postage was your cost for learning. In my opinion, the best learned lessons are the ones that cost us.

Here's an example of a nice coin with market acceptable (but possibly not original either) surfaces (albeit in a higher grade):

That is a gorgeous coin but in all fairness, it is also a $500+ coin in AU and in the thousands in uncirculated.

Quote: Definitely cleaned and NOT worth it. Sorry May I ask why ? One thing that I see on the forum is that we sometimes give an answer like that with no explanation. It would be very helpful if there were some reasoning attached to the opinion. Is it the color or were you able to manipulate the photo for a better look ? I truly am curious.
