I bought an 1857 Seated Liberty half dollar w/full LIBERTY for $70.
Was this a good deal? Numismedia.com has this coin in VF-20 at $70.

$70 sounds a touch high. It looks VF+ with a light cleaning and $50 would be more reasonable. If it's what you wanted, that's what counts.

I thought it looked a bit cleaned, but wasn't sure. I'm no expert on coins. The description didn't say it was cleaned.

If it was cleaned how much is it worth?

Will send it back as soon as possible. Thanks. I was a bit unsure about this coin at first, but there were other bidders, so I figured it had to be a good coin. Someone else also bid $70.

About $45-$50 with the light cleaning. It doesn't look harshly cleaned, and has VF+ details, so you didn't do too bad.

$40 would have been a good price for that piece but it's hard to find them that low. If it was in a problem-free VF30 holder, then $70 would have been right on the money. No pun intended.

Well, I'll try again and hopefully have better judgment. Thanks for the info.

If this coin was mine, I would keep it. It appears (to me) to be a nice, problem free VF-30/35 (nice obverse, a little wear on reverse wings, but even) and (again, to me) worth the money you paid.

Finding a decent 1857 half on the bay is a challenge. It's an extremely popular date with seated collectors, though not exceedingly rare. Something about the way that date looks ... I've been watching for years to get just the right one at the right price.

I think you didn;t get ripped off or anything. I wouldn't be upset if I purchased it

To it looks like it has been cleaned. If you don't mind that, I would keep it, if you do, send it back and continue looking. I've spent months looking for just the right coin on ebay and else where, take your time and enjoy the search.

I've been looking for a Seated Half with Motto to upgrade the one in my 7070 album (ok, but really dark toning) for probably close to a year. I agree with others who say it's hard to find original examples at a decent price.

This coin is probably in the middle of the price range IMO. You didn't overpay/get ripped; not a screaming bargain (which are unfortunately very elusive indeed). It does look lightly cleaned but I don't always consider that a show-stopper if the eye appeal is still nice.

I think the main thing is "how do you feel about it"? If you look at it and are not sure, maybe you send it back. I've learned when I buy a coin (especially on ebay) if you keep getting that nagging feeling when you look at it, that probably won't go away and you will end up looking to upgrade later. If you look at it and think "it's really nice", then keep it.

Agreed Even with graded coins. You must buy the coin not the grade it was given. I have seen MS coins that I thought looked ugly. On the other hand I have seen XF coins that I would have paid MS prices for.

True, I have seen MS graded coins that don't look too nice, and I've seen lesser graded coins that look nicer. Overall, I like the coin because it is clean in appearance, but I really don't want a "cleaned" coin. This coin was one of the better examples (maybe because it was cleaned) of an unslabbed coin on ebay. I probably can't afford a PCGS or NGC slabbed half, so I looked for a nice raw coin.
