This is a 1909 vdb but it is very very worn and used a QX3 microscope to pull up this image and am trying to identify a S mint mark.

I see kind of ghost S there but why the s is almost invisible if the date still very clear ?! Anyway I hope you can prove it's a s-VDB even if you have label it because ll worth the investment for sure if end up as a 1909 s- VDB . Good luck!

I don't think it is because the S would be more to the right and lower, below the "O" in 09. John1

The area in question to me appears to be a contact mark. You can see where the metal is pushed in and the movement outward on each side flows from this damage. Just wishful thinking.

keep in mind - when you have to fight or justify why a coin is what you want, it generally isn't

There is no mintmark on that coin. A mintmark would never be mushy or indistinct on a 1909 cent - not enough of them were minted to wear out the mintmark.

The other thing to keep in mind is the B in the VDB is a different style in the San Francisco 1909 VDB cents.
After posting this I questioned myself and looked in Chuck's book. The spacing of the dots in the initials do vary on different dies but I didn't see a specific reference to this being consistent with one spacing with coins from Philadelphia and another spacing with coins from San Francisco. So now I am not sure if the VDB is usable to differentiate between the two. Does anyone else know?

To my knowledge this statement is not true. What is your reference?
There is no basic difference between the styles of VDB used on the two different VDB issues. My reference to the dots was made to question whether the initials were added to each individual die because the spacing does not match from die to die.

I will have to retract the statement about the two different styles of the B. I was told this once by an old dealer. He has since pasted so I have nothing to back this up. Actually, getting feedback from you makes me feel it is not true. I guess there is a lot of information to be learned from dealers but my lesson here is you still have to research it to confirm it's true. You got me on this one. Thanks for pointing it out.
