Why are these two pennies different colors? Is one more collectable than the other?

Copper comes in an amazing array of colors from near silver looking to dark chocolate. In your case it could have been something as simple as one went through the washing machine or was exposed to sunlight for a while. Any number of variables can affect the toning.

I would guess that your 2007-D is closer to what they look like from the mint.

Which is more collectible? Personal choice. With newer dates I try to get the same toning across the set. With older dates this gets harder and harder.

Thanks. The coins are actually in the same shinny condition (photo taken with phone), the non-D one just has a red tint throughout the coin.

I'd wager the one on the left was plated early in a batch, and the one on the right plated late in a batch...thus the one on the left is plated with fairly pure copper, the one on the right a bit of zinc mixed in....

And I could be completely wrong...

I think the 2007-P has started to tone a little. Eventually the red will become deeper until it begins to be more brown than red until becoming all brown.

Copper is a very reactive metal. Many colors result from many different forms of environmental exposure. None is any more or less collectible than the next, it's just a matter of preference of the collector as to which 'tone' of color they like more.

The important part here is to choose coins wisely for an album set so that they match in quality and color. That's the challenge and the hard part to collecting Lincoln cents.

I'm with KenKat on this one. Different cents tone differently due to their exposure and the fact that the planchets will have very slight physical differences in their makeup.
