Yeah, that's a tough question. You might be able to get the population of graded specimens like fioti mentions, but what about the ones that aren't?
Like my two.

Also meant to mention: Last I read there are 5 known dies for Philly and 7 known dies for Denver. *If* each die had a full run of *possibly* a million coins each, there could be 5 & 7 million of these coins out there, respectively.
Makes you wonder why more haven't been found.

I found this on another site:"PCGS does not yet attribute the variety but ANACS does. Yet their population # is 0. There are very few of the Phiilys being reported, about 1 a month since the discovery in 2007. What I believe happened was the anvils were set and the dies installed, and stamping begun. Then someone in quality control realized the year was incorrect and stopped the process to change the anvil (obverse die generally). But so far only one die of the Denver has shown up. So there could be a run of the life of the die about 70,000 or, if my theory is correct as few as a couple of dozen ? Strange that with as many people searching for this 1988/89 hybrid that more have not surfaced. Also, I think those stamped went right into bags for circulation. So, the longer they are out there, the more get destroyed or ruined." Read more: http://www.cointalk.com/showthread....xzz1CStG6Gan

The reverse dies (006) were inserted when the 005 dies wore out. So their is no way to determine if they ran a full life. These were probably replacement dies from retired 005.

Maybe we could do a survey on here...but fioti has a good point because I run into quite a few 88's that are too far gone to see or bother with..and there are quite a few with Grease Filled Dies in that area. The FG needs to be pretty clear to identify as an RDV-006

my question was almost clear but almost answered
how many out there in the wild.....a.k.a....circulation
we wont probably know due to worn out 88 dies replaced with 89 dies until the mint count was met

So, is your question to ascertain value of these coins because I would like to know that for myself. WOLF

Nobody knows the answer to that WildBill. The only population reports would be of the slabbed coins. There are 21 P's and 3 D's listed on ANACS site.

All the D coins are believed to be fewer than 12, although, through various forums I could only find 10. One is owned by W S Slaughter, 4 by J Koelling, 1 by Wayne D***, 1 by Jose Cortez and 1 by "10gary22". The ANACS authenticated specimens I could find are owned by Mr Koelling & 10gary22. each having one of the AU55+. I am of the belief that the Denver dies were changed to the 89 reverse and the coins only stamped while the box of 89 D obverse dies was opened and prepared. The idea that complete die runs exists is not supported by the numbers. If that would have happened, they would have been more common than the 09 LP2, and obviously they are not. No one knows how many were minted in either Philly or Denver and to my knowledge no Denver coin is for sale. The collectors with the slabbed Denvers both stated they would not sell in their lifetimes.

As a note, the AU40 is also owned by mr. Koelling.

Not sure where I read the numbers, but full die runs certainly do not make sense at this point.
However, it still does not make sense that (now 8) Philly and 5 Denver dies have been identified with only a dozen examples to show for it. There must be more out there.

Their is and I will find more. "Strike it rich with pocket change 2nd edition" by Ken Potter does not identify the 88-D but does identify the 88 Philly. WOLF
