So I have been reading the forums as much as possible recently, and I got laid off Friday (only for a couple weeks) so I have some extra time to get some boxes of coins and look through them with my time off and I want to get a few things straight before I start opening these boxes of coins. If something is wrong please correct me

1. I read that alot people keep all pennies 1982 and before because of the copper vaule.

2. Keep all wheaties A. they have copper value and B. they potentially have more value than that.

3. Both P and D mint marks of the 2009 nickels (because of low mint numbers)

4. 1999 State Quarters minus the Georgia (same reason as the 2009 Nickels)

5. Any coins with an S mint mark because they came from the San Fran mint which is usually for the collector coins and collector sets.

6. Any Quarter or Dime 1964 or before because of the silver value and any Half Dollar 1970 and before for the same reason.

If there is anything else I should know or anything I missed please feel free to add to the list, I am just starting to collect and it is a pet peeve of mine when I miss something or if I get rid of something I should have kept.

Also I am thinking about getting the silver proof sets, and would like any advice anyone has on that (when to buy them, who to buy them from, should I get more than one of them for each year). I like the way they look and think they will have more value one day than the regular proof sets.

Good start list. Keep all your 1998,1999 and 2000 Lincolns to check for Wide AM variety. 1972, 1984, 1992 and 1995 for varieties. All your BU Lincons fron The 60's 70's and 80's. I keep 1981 and before Lincs for copper (can't be bothered sorting the 82's) Anyway these are just what I look at. There are soooo many other things you could find!

You are beginning with a great amount of information and knowledge. Good luck with your searching and take frequent breaks so you are alert and don't miss anything.

Your rules look fine for searching change. #1 above should be amended to note that in 1982 copper cents were only struck early in the year. Cents struck in the 2nd half of 1982 were zinc.

Also your note about S mint coins isn't accurate. All types of coins are minted in San Fran and most are only worth face value.

Thanks for the replies all, I knew the don't clean the coins rule but forgot to put it on there. I may update it soon. Another question I have is what is the best way to store the coins I really wanna keep. The copper pennies I am putting in growlers that I cleaned out (I used to work for a brewery). I am also making sets of the State Quarters the Presidential dollars, lincoln pennies and so on. I have a few of the blue collector folders you can get cheap. Or is there a better way to store them and keep them safe?

Great info! I just assumed that I should always hang on to S mint marks as I rarely run across them. I also correlated this with lower production numbers, but now that I have consulted the Red Book, I see that this is not always the case.

Seems like a solid start. I'm guessing your getting atleast 1 box of everything? If that's your plan, after your all done I would find one or two the interest you the most and really focus on those. After you get going good then add another. Just so you can take your time and really learn each denomination. Mine have been pennies and nickels for about three years I think. Lol. Just my 2 cents

There are a number of other Statehood Quarters that will bring better money than the 1999 coins. You should check either roll bid, the market report, or any web store selling full rolls, and save the ones that are selling for the most money.

Overall general rule of mine.......

"Keep ANYTHING in Brilliant Uncirculated Condition" !
Regardless of the mintmark, date, or denomination.

Roll searching is such a fun pastime ! The little keeper treasures that one finds along the way make it all worthwhile....

Keep it....hold it....love it.....learn it.....protect it....admire it......and occasionally tell it how pretty it is......

I'm really impressed with your knowledge gathering "beforehand" with roll searching......You're starting off PERFECTLY !

By the way......in your "nickel searching", keep an eye out for the Silver War Nickels !
They range from 1942 to 1945, and you can spot them because on the reverse, the mintmark is a HUGE P, D, or S above the dome of Monticello.

Year.... Mintage..... Numismatic Value Range
1942... P.... 57,873,000.... $1.25 - $95.00
1942... S.... 32,900,000.... $1.25 - $150.00
1943... P.... 271,165,000.... $1.10 - $120.00
1943... D.... 15,294,000.... $1.25 - $1100.00
1943... S.... 104,060,000.... $1.25 - $200.00
1943/2 ...P.... unknown.... $30.00 - $1265.00
1944... P.... 119,150,000.... $1.25 - $500.00
1944... D.... 32,309,000.... $1.25 - $300.00
1944... S.... 21,640,000.... $1.25 - $900.00
1945... P.... 119,408,100.... $1.00 - $300.00
1945... D.... 37,158,000.... $1.25 - $500.00
1945... S.... 58,939,000.... $1.25 - $400.00

Even in horrible condition......they can still be worth about a $1.00 apiece !

Here's a picture of what the reverse looks like so that you can see what to look for with that mintmark.
A-Few-More-Questions

And this is the obverse (front).....looks like any other Jefferson, so you need to look for those dates and that BIG mintmark !A-Few-More-Questions

I suggest you look into purchasing a few books on coins. Any one that has general info and grading info. Without this info you may well start collecting coins that will be worth very little in 20 or 30 years and if you loose your job, you may need money more than saving coins that are really not worth saving.
Asking your question on this forum already proves what you should, could or might want to save. HOWVER, such info is only good if you print it out since in a few days this post will slowly move on to another place in life.
Also, there are many coins that are errors and those could well be worth more than just a low mintage issue.
For an example of a decent coin book, try the Red Book by Whitman Publishing and on pages 404 and up they show a large variety of error coins that you may find.

Let me add that I did already buy the Striking it rich with your pocket change book, and have a few websites on my favorites so I am doing ok checking for errors. I would like to know what is a good book to learning how to grade the coins because I would like to keep the best coins for my sets. Thanks for the info on the War Nickels though I didn't know that and the info on the State Quarters. I will probably only get a box of nickels and pennies today. (My wife hates all the coins all over the tables) than when I am ready to turn the ones I don't want back in I will go with the a quarter and dime box.

Another question where is a good place to get half dollars? my bank doesn't keep them and they send them back when they get them, also I have to order boxes of dollar coins in boxes of 1000 dollars, so if I order the Presidential dollars would I get all the same President or would I get a variety?

Can anyone give me the name of a good book that will help you learn to grade coins? Wife wants to go to dinner when she gets home in about 30 minutes and the place is next to a very large book store so I can look to see if they have it. Also going through my first 25 dollars in pennies as we speak and will post what I find shortly.
