Okay, as most of you know I am shaking off the dust from a hiatus...

I see that there are rolls of 2009 cents offered that were packaged by the mint? I have never heard of the mint selling sealed rolls to the public, was this done for only the Lincoln series? In fact, I didn't know that the mint rolled coins.

Well, I can see from the mint's page that they are selling Presidential dollar and quarter rolls. It is just shocking to see the mint selling rolls for a premium when it seems like you can get string rolls that contain the same?

What are special about the coin rolls from the mint? Are the coins superior in some way?

The coins are absolutely the same as the ones you can get from the bank. The hype that makes them sell for higher money is that since they are directly from the mint they must be cleaner coins - this is absolutely a MYTH.

I like the pretty paper

...but opening the mint boxes they come in decreases the premium so I have never actually seen the paper.

All kidding aside the prices are getting ridiculous at this point. I only get them from the mint because of convenience. Having them just ship to me each release is much easier then seeking them out, buying and paying shipping, or trading with others when I 'happen' upon a luck score at the bank.

If anyone can direct me to an easy, less expensive way to get my President Dollar, Park Quarters, Natives, JFK's, (even the nickles, dimes, and pennys rolls, which I get from ebay) from both mints at one location for cheaper prices and less hassle please let me know! I'm ready to give up on the mint.

Westward Expansion Nickels in 2005, State Quarters, Half Dollars, and Golden Dollars have all been sold by the Mint.

The biggest attraction to them is that they are sold in two roll P&D sets which is not something you can get from a bank, only by purchasing or trading with other collectors.

B.I.N.G.O. ! .......

That's exactly right, it's the ONLY way for millions of collectors to secure BOTH mints......it's easy to get "one" mint from a bank wherever you live, but that's where it ends.
And for a "Ten Year Program" or longer, simply trying to trade for what you want, 5 times a year, for a decade or longer, plus shipping and handling/postage....is just unrealistic.

With the Satins going away, however, maybe one can go back to the old days, and secure both mints from Mint Sets.

But, to each his own.

The "premium" is worth it for the "Mint Wrapper", for several reasons. For some folks, those reasons do not apply, for others, they simply do.
And as long as there are enough folks in the community who realize this premium and desire it, there will always be a "buy, sell, & trade" actionable opportunity with "Mint Wrapped Rolls" and/or roll sets.

And keep in mind too.....this whole issue is still in it's infancy really. It's not even "off the ground" yet. This form of collecting will be around, now, for decades and centuries !
It started within the State Qtr. program with being able to get "rolls" directly from the Mint.
It's "popularity" and perceived popularity, that will make them stay.

Coint for which the mint has sold or shipped true "Mint rolled" rolls.

Cents
2009 P & D rolls for each of the four designs
2010 P & D

Nickels
2003 P & D
2004 P & D of both Westward Journey designs
2005 P & D of both Westward Journey designs

Dimes
None

Quarters

The P & D State Quarter rolls started in 2000 but I don't think it was until the VA issue.
2001 through 2011 P & D rolls

Halves

2001 - 2011 P & D rolls

Dollars
2000 rolls were not sold to the public but they were sent to Wal-mart an then a little later banks were allowed to get direct shipments from the Mint. These were all US Mint wrapped rolls in yellow paper.
2001 - 2008 P & D rolls of the Sac dollars
2007 - 2011 P & D rolls of each of the president dollar designs.
2009 - 2011 P & D rolls of the Native American dollars.

The $250 boxes of the direct ship dollars, both NA and President dollars I do not believe these rolls are Mint wrapped.

Except for the direct ship dollars all of the other rolls sold by the Mint come in a special US Mint wrapping paper. BU coins in paper that does NOT identify itself as coming from the Mint are NOT Mint wrapped rolls.
