How does this happen, one letter machine doubled and nothing else on the coin?

B Liberty.

I have often wondered that as well. It does not seem possible, yet I see it all the time? It really gives me fits when it occurs on mint marks. Its so easy to confuse it with an rpm.

It could be just one device is affected because of circulation damage happened. On mint marks, sometimes the mint mark is set deeper into the die than the rest of the other devices. This makes the mint mark taller and a stronger possibilty of being touched while the coin is being ejected. So many things can affect a coin that we don't see. Either bay the same result is just a question and the value is what is marked on the reverse.
