on numismedia in the Mercury dime section it lists 1942--which doesn't get much of a premium--and then 1942/41, which fetches quite a premium. what does the slash indicate?
The 1942/1P and 1942/1D Mercs are Class III Doubled Dies(Design Hub Doubling) as are all other modern "overdates". This type of doubled die occurs when a die is hubbed the first time with one design and then hubbed the second time with another design. The two dies used to mint these coins were first impressed on a 1941 hub. For some reason, there was a delay in the second hubbing and the second impression was done with a 1942 hub.
