I was looking through some silver boxes (coins sold at silver melt) at a local coin shop. And was seeing a few Standing Liberty quartersmixed in. I picked up a few, now I am wondering if coins like these are trading at melt in other areas. I am guessing that with silver high, more types of coins are being traded at melt prices. Edit .. I forgot to say these were $5.10 each just over 20X face. Edited by GR58 02/08/2011 4:46 pm

Definitely not in my area! Those would all be carded in 2x2's and priced in the range of 2x's melt around here. I think that they are in great shape for junk silver! I would buy all that they had in that condition - hard to go wrong. Good work! Nearly all the Standing Liberty quarters I see selling for melt around here are dateless slickers and even they are rare. Chugly

There are some SLQs around here at melt, but they are in short supply and only a small minority of them are in the condition of yours.

I really was not sure how these were trading. I guess I will have to be on the look out for more of them.

It's a shame they're going to the pot. Such is the market.

Rising commodity prices = overtaking numismatic value. The only up side of these pieces of history going to the smelter is they raise the values of whatever is left.

Yeah, there are some here, but much less than just a few months ago. The last time I went in looking for some, the shop had a whole small tray full to dig through and buy at melt. The other day they had maybe a dozen and 1/3 - 1/2 of them were bright, shiny dipped coins. I pulled a couple that I liked...I'll probably go back and pick up the others in a few days. Hopefully they'll be adding more as people sell off some of their silver.

The coin shop in my area doesn't have junk silver boxes to sift through. They told me to tell them a quantity of what I wanted and they would bag it up for me.

About the same at all the coin shows too. Actually even at a local flea market they run close to that.

We went through a similar silver melt in the early 80's when the Hunt brothers drove the price from $11.00 to $50.00. Man, a lot of coins disappeared.

You can get Barbers, SLQs & Washingtons in my area at or below melt in similar condition to yours... Last weekend my guy had 25 common Barber dimes in similar condidtion for 1.75 a pop. I even told my guy that was less than 25 dollars a toz and he said he didn't care, he was making money at 1.75 and it is all about turning over inventory. That particular inventory got turned over into my safe.
