ok say I buy a 1798 Silver dollar off of ebay for say $800 unslabbed. If I immediately send it into a TPG company and they say its fake; What happens to the coin? and is that proof enough to dispute (and win) on ebay?

I doubt it....best to know your coin before ordering off ebay and be ready to return right away. I think sending it off and putting it in other peoples posession will not help your case. As others have said before, know what you are doing with coins of this price range or buy only slabbed from a reputable source. All of my claims have been made within minutes of recieving the coin so I have no experience with your scenario....just common sense to me.

to get a refund you will have to send the item back to the seller and see if he will refund your money first. Be sure to to have delivery confirmation to prove to Paypal/ebay that you did return the coin. That is what they will make you do when you file a claim anyway not sure what proof you have to have to prove its fake but if you can prove you sent it back to the seller and didn't get a refund ebay and Paypal will usually give you a refund themselves but if you didn't get proof you are out of luck. I was looking for some Monster Beats for my son as a Christmas present so I bought some that were fake on ebay and had communication with the seller and he told me to send them back and he would give me a refund. well I didn't think there would be any problems so I just sent them back without any confirmation, to make a long story short he didn't send my money back and when I filed a claim they told me that since I had already sent the item back and can't prove I did so they wouldn't issue a refund

Yes, I should have added that when returning fakes, I didn't need to prove they were fake, but as Bryan1315 pointed out, make sure you have delivery confirmation. It doesn't matter if they have a return policy either. They are responsible for verifying authenticity. So far, 3 returns went smoothly for me and one was returned to a bed & breakfast in England (not the owner either).

PCGS will return fake coins to you. As I understand it, they "body bag" it - put it in a little plastic bag rather than a slab.

Do yourself a favor and NEVER buy an expensive coin without looking it over in person first...

Mosy likely the coin has been removed from the original holder so you can't prove it is the same coin, that's a good reason to deny the return. There is a good chance you have run past any return priviledge time period, Another reason to TRY and deny the return. You have incurred the expense of shipping and insurance both ways plus the certification fees for the TPG which I would not expect the seller to reimburse. If you really want to do this talk to the seller first and tell him what you plan on doing. If he isn't willing to extend the return priviledge if it turns out to be fake you would probably be better off not buying it because HE doesn't trust it either. (A return of genuine but not gradable on the other hand would NOT be covered under the extended return priviledge.)

I've seen sellers stating they will accept returns at any time, regardless of their regular x day return privilege, should a TPG ever determine it's not genuine. I don't think it's unreasonable to bring up the topic. The protocols and chain of custody requirements should be well spelled out though. That exact coin is on my all time wish list. I've never bought a slabbed coin, but that's one where the peace of mind might be well worth the extra bucks for me.

If you are going to buy a coin like that on ebay, 1. Know who you are dealing with, reputable? 2. Clear return policy. 3. ALWAYS buy PCGS,NGC,ANACS only! I know, Chinese counterfeits. That's why you must know who you are buying from.
