Been roll searching the last few days and I found a 1942 nickel with a D mint mark but it is next to the building not above it like the War Nickels, so is this anything? I also have a 1969 S that is in great condition, how can I tell if it is a proof coin?

In 1942...
They minted both versions (Cu-Ni and silver) at the Philadelphia mint. They only minted the Cu-Ni version at the Denver mint. They only minted the silver version at the San Francisco mint.

The 1942 D is a semi key coin to the series with a relatively lower mintage but is still cheap in circulated grades. In fact it hardly demands much extra in circulated condition except for AU. Seems like there are always uncirculated examples available but they demand considerably more. I do think that the 1942 D was overlooked and not as heavily hoarded in BU rolls. I always saved every 1942 D, now I have tucked away 4 or 5 BU examples.

Quote: They only minted the Cu-Ni version at the Denver mint. They only minted the silver version at the San Francisco mint. Grammatically confusing. Try They minted only the Cu-Ni version at the Denver mint. They minted only the silver version at the San Francisco mint.

My grammar checker did not have a problem with it.

I find that I seldom take the advice of my grammer checker. I usually do not like the form that it wishes to use.

I agree with that statement. Even if it did add the "green squiggle" to my post, I would not have altered it. For the record, biggfredd's edit does not sound right to my ear. That is not to say I am right and he is wrong, but that I did not parse it the same way as him.

speak bad English long enough, and you get used to it.
They only minted the Cu-Ni version at the Denver mint. Not true, they also minted it at Philadelphia.
They only minted the silver version at the San Francisco mint. Not true, they also minted it at Philadelphia.
Do you see the difference now?
