Received an email from an investigator into a criminal case today asking for information regarding value of Lincoln Cent die varieties that were stolen from a vehicle. I called him on my nickel and asked what I could do to help. He didn't know anything about coins, and we muddled together through an ANACS invoice until I had enough information to gather a list of values. I just finished investigating the values for him, and used ebay, Numismaster, Numismedia, the PCGS website, coppercoins.com, and actually called Dr. Wiles, attributer for CONECA on his cell to ask about one of the coins. I feel redeemed in a certain way - odd, actually. Almost actually important...that I was able to help the law investigating something that shot right down my alley, and in one small way I feel like that "expert witness" who was brought in to forensically identify shoe tracks in the dirt. Pretty cool!

Oh...this happened in Iowa, and the total value of the Fed-Ex package stolen was around $1,430 give or take a few bucks for inaccuracies. Not sure how much information I should give out considering this is an open investigation, so I'll shut up now.

Very interesting.
Did he say how he got your name? Or did he just google experts?

Evidently the collector who lost the coins printed out pages from coppercoins to show the officer what he had lost. The officer put 2 and 2 together and went to the web and found me there. Tell you the truth I don't know the collector - never heard of him. Nice to know there are people out there using my site that I've neve heard of.

That is just awesome Coppercoins! Your generosity and willingness to help others seems to have no limits!
Having been a victim in this situation before, I can assure you that the help you provided will give the collector some much needed peace at a time they need it most. Good work!

Agreed ... your willingness to assist in a law enforcement investigation is indeed exemplary and speaks well to your knowledge and character.
Should they call back needing expert testimony ... that is when I submit your knowledge and expertise should be compensated.
Let us know how this turns out.

sweet... now you can have your own branch of law enforcement, and call it N.C.I.S, National Coin Investigative Services ... But in all seriousness, that's a noble deed you did for 1 very sad collector

Yup! That's the one!
I doubt there would be any need to go to court...I would bet it's over for me.
