Hi,

I bought a bag of these tankas back in the late 1980's - for about $2 apiece - though I think they have increased a bit since then. They are still a cheap silver coin though.

Anyway, I know that Krause gives some breakdown into varities but I think it is limited.

Does anyone know of a good reference for these?

I've illustrated some of them below

Have a look at the bibliography on the Wikipedia Site for 'Tibetan Coins', you may find the references you need there. I would then go to a major book publisher such as Spink's or Seaby's, and ask them to track down a copy of the book you require.

That is how I acquired my copy of Schoth for Chinese coins.

If it ever rains like that around these parts, I am going to turn my umbrella upside down until it fills up.
I love those coins. Remarkable variety.
What size are they? Are they all the same?

Hi,

Thanks for that pointer Sel. I did actually look there before posting but the list of about 15 references isn't really much help. Some of them are occasional papers, likely only focusing on one particular type and others are likely only available in Chinese. There seems to be a great variety in the level of detail referecnes to these go into. I do have a couple of the occasional papers but even Krause is just as useful. I just don't know if there is a "gold standard" reference work for these.

I too have Schoth, which is rather an annoying book because of it's size - it just doesn't fit neatly into a bookshelf :) I'm sure you know that it is really quite outdated now and that both Hartill and Jen have updated the attributions and chronology. If you have a lot of Chinese coins, I'd advise investing in one of these.

My Silveryears - yes and no, :) they are all the same in that they are supposed to be the same value - that is a one tanka coin, but there are a lot of varieties hidden in the design of the coin. It takes a bit of getting "your eye in" but one you see what's going on the differences are easy to spot.

They are all circa 27mm and are silver - though sometimes I question the fineness. I see them going through the ebay system the odd time, but the prices always seem inflated to me - maybe I'm just behind the times.

thanks

Dear Bacchus2

it seems that you did not study sufficiently the bibliography of "Historical Money of Tibet" in wikipedia.

You find the following there:
Rhodes, Nicholas: The Gaden Tangka of Tibet. Oriental Numismatic Society, Occasional Paper, no. 17, January 1983.

This is the best work on your subject. It allows you to identify all your Gaden tangka types and put them into a chronological order.

You can get a copy of Rhodes`article from Scot Semans (coincoin.com)

Kind regards

$2.00 apiece? WOW! I wish I'd had a chance like that 20 odd years ago.

I only have a couple of relatively early Tibetan coins and they have got to be some of the mosy difficult to pin down definitively. I really enjoy trying to identify a coin to year/type (whatever) but from personal experience I do know that it can sometimes take years. Then again that's what makes this hobby so great.

Best of luck in your quest and please keep us posted on your endeavours.

Yes there all Ga-den Tangkas and you must have the article by Nicholas Rhodes ( who sadly died last year ) from the Oriental Numismatic Society site to even start identification.

The hopeless KM standard catalog contribution serves more to confuse than enlighten, but remains a reasonable type and date system based on Rhodes. Scott Semans published a paper long ago but still available and quite useful if you can figure out how to convert to Rhodes index.
But the best online source of photos is the "britishmuseum.org/research/search_the_collection_database"
which has hundreds of photos.

You have the observe alignment correct but, despite the normal convention of simply flipping the coin, the reverse of Ga-den Tangkas are normally repositioned so that the 3 letter in the SW position of most of your photos is at top in the North position.

Your coins are F viii, C i, C ii, D ii, C ii, F viii, F vi/F vii, B iii(hook up), B iii(hookup, F xi, B i, F i, F iii, B ii, F x, B iii(hookup), B iv, F i, F xi at a quick glance.

All of these categories represent several dies, in some cases over 50 - you can see this by comparing your two F I coins etc. Or much more clearly on the BM site. You can date these by letter in KM (Krause).
They are all worth considerably over the scrap value of silver (though they have a vary variable silver content, later issues being bullion) .

in due time I ham hoping to extend the Rhodes index to cope with an individual die identification, but with well over 1000 it is a labour of love and a gordian knot.... so don't hold your breath

Am only occasional site visitor so please bear in mind
